For any idiots out there who still think birdshot is effective

Even though I personally prefer 00 Buckshot (Low Recoil) to anything else, I once again will play Devils advocate on this one.

Thing is, even though such overpenetration cases may be rare as you stated, the legal liabilities (for many) are just too real and scary; thus, this may outweigh the benefits of using buckshot for HD...particularly "full house" 00 buck.

Again, pre-planned lines of fire. Common sense. #1 or 0 or even maybe #4 buckshot. Judged by 12 > Carried by 6.

Do you have family, is this the main issue at hand? If so, why don't you all have a plan in case of a B&E to make sure you know where everyone is. Spend some time thinking about your floor-plan.

It's just me and the wife at this point. The kids are grown and the grand kids visit occasionally. The biggest concern is we live in an apartment. No real good way to coordinate with the neighbors or know where they are. The landlord told us the upper floors were concrete slabs but based on the noise I'm hearing from upstairs right now I kind of doubt it.

On a different note, I just ran into a former neighbor that does shotgun training for the local sheriff's department and the city police. They are considering switching to #4 Buck for both sheriff and police departments. Their testing led them to believe it was the best combination of stopping power, shot pattern, and low possibility of over penetration. The city cops are very concerned about over penetration here. About 5 years ago a police officer accidentally killed an innocent citizen when a pistol round missed the target and went through the wall of a nearby house. The round killed a man sleeping on his sofa. His young son was sleeping on top of him at the time. It caused a huge review of tactics and equipment.

Wow. Epic bad luck on your part :(

#4 buck is considered OK by some, not by others. I personally think in an appartment it will do the job, but remember, anything that is effective WILL go through drywall and be able to kill on the other side. Period.

+1 if it has the power to go through a man it will go through 2 slabs of drywall.
