The minimalist gear people are just as ridiculous as the gear whores.

There is a middle balance that neither side will concede is the best of both world.

Having 100 mags and 20,000 rounds may be total overkill, but it's nice to have if you can afford it. Having one mag and 5 rounds, and saying to make those shots count, is putting yourself at an unnecessary disadvantage for no real reason.

Having too much stuff is rarely a problem. Having too much stuff at the expense of other stuff is potentially a problem. Not having enough stuff is almost always a problem.

As always, potential purchases should be put through a vigorous cost / benefit analysis and then ranked on a likelihood / priority level ... and then you buy the highest priority items that give you the most benefit for the cost that you are most likely to need.

You'd think this was common sense, but lots of internet discussions show otherwise ... guys with 20 guns that don't own a water filter, etc.

I'm with Duggan on this one. There's a sweetspot in there somewhere. There's too many minimalists out there that really don't know how to be a minimalist, some do but most don't. They're chasing a trend and joining a group because being part of a group is "cool". They're just as bad as the overkillers with all the fancy stuff. For some reason they feel better having just what you need instead of having something better than you need. Good for them I guess. Having things you don't need is nice if you can afford it, assuming you already have the stuff you need. Somebody could just as easily make some cute videos of the minimalist bear starving to death because he ran out of ammo cause he only had a handful of rounds. Or because he couldn't stop an attacker with his .22. Maybe he froze to death because he was using a poncho for a sleeping bag and didn't have a tent in the freezing rain, but at least his backpack weighed half as much.

The videos were funny though. :D
