Meprolite Night Sight Model Number for M4?

Searching the forums, this Meprolite sight seems to be the preferred iron sight for the M4 (if anyone knows of something better, please pipe up...not talking about optics here, just the iron sights). For those who have installed these, what is the model number? I've found ones for the M1S90...they appear to be the same, but want to be sure from someone who's done it. Any instructions on swapping these out too? Thanks much.

You will need to buy a new (get a couple, they are cheap) locking nut from Brownells for the front-sight. It rounds easily. It has a nylon "sleeve" and DO NOT! use thread-locker on it. The nylon is enough.

 

You will also need a 5.5mm wrench.

 

Installation is pretty straight-forward. Do you have any questions in specific?

Thanks Un... Just the front and rear part number if it not too much trouble, and the same for the Brownell's part number (did a search there and couldn't find it).

 

And maybe there's some step by step instructions somewhere. Looks pretty straight forward, but as they say, "read the freaking instructions!"

Thanks. Just "un-screw" the rear sight adjustment ALL the way as I recall (been a year or two), and the front is visually self-explanatory.

Realistically, having shot AR platforms at night with night-sights, I question the need/utility for it. I'm not discouraging the mod, just saying that it is hard to make hits at night with night sights. Do not expect them to be a "game-changer". At best in most situations it will just help you find the weapon/assess where the muzzle is pointing better. I think a reflex type sight would be better.

Thanks Un...you're the best. And I agree with everything you say. Should have mentioned that the iron sights with tritium are for backup only. Fairly improbable scenario needing them...would need to have my primary optic fail, at night, to really need them. But then again, the most probable time I would employ the M4 in anger is at night.

 

Been researching my primary sights for awhile, and since these weapons are so heavy already, have narrowed it down to the Aimpoint T-1/H-1 or a good quality reflex. As you know, weight is an issue for employment or when carrying for long periods of time...cost is not a factor at all, so I welcome your ideas. I've seen a great deal of M4's with the T-1...less with a reflex sight. However, seems a reflex sight would save a few ounces and MAY be more appropriate for a shotgun (more open...less "tube" to look through).

I have the meprolights on mine. I use the mainly to give myself a visual reference to where the sights are in low light. That is all the rear ones are for. Your eyes are so close to the aperture that you can't even try to align the 3 dots. All they do is give you a visual indicator as to where the rear sights as you shoulder it and take aim. After the first shot, the muzzle flash will blind you and you won't see any front sights at night anyway.

 

Note how the spring sits in the rear housing when you disassemble the rear. It's all pretty straight forward as Unobtanium describes. The front can be a pain simply to source the 5.5mm box wrench. Ignition wrench sets often have one though. It's a royal pain to get the new nut started on the front sight post. It just takes some cursing.

Lok-tite the blade in place with blue LT or something else that is not permanent and you will save yourself either an extra set of hands, or a lot of cursing.
