  1. This video expresses my sentiments on birdshot for home defense...............

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytTompmRE-8&feature=related

I don't think people understand why the people that use "birdshot" for HD. If I was single without kids,no neighors, or had brick ex. walls, then I would use buckshot no questions asked. BUT I'm not single, and I have kids so overpenitation is a big deal to me. I man on that video was show you walmart 8 shot junk. It does compare to the birdshot I use. I use 1 1/4 4 shot max dram. Is it buckshot. NO. But at the right distance and the right choke it will work.

7 yards or less ( and more likely Less) will be your first chance to fire. Most likely the distance will be under 10 feet. Just think about what would do at 10 feet with a mod. or full choke. It would at least slow you down which would give me time to think. I think the more time you have to think is the most important thing to think about. Not whats in your gun.

  2. You really do need to toughen up. You are physically capable of it I am sure, work on the mind. It's like me when I first started doing kung fu. I was scared to death of being punched in the face. After a while, it just became the norm. Suck it up and shoot the thing and you will learn to like it, or maybe im just a sick sick man

How is your buddy Pat Morita doing?

  3. Hey,

    welcome.

First, you should start a new thread. Your kind of stealing the thunder from the other guy. Second, You bought a tank. 28'' barrel is kind of a bird gun. Can you shoot slugs though it. YES. Can you get a rifle choke for it. YES. You can shoot any type of ammo in the nova. (caliber 12 gauge). Did if come with chokes? which ones? Improved cylinder and modifed nova chokes can shoot steel and lead. Full chokes you can't shoot steel but lead in ok.

The 18 1/2 tactical barrel will help only because it as sights on the barrel. Benelli makes rifled barrels for the Nova as well. The only problem you will have with buying a new barrel is it will cost more than the gun. The rifled barrel with be 219-249 and I don't know if you can find a tactical barrel.

I'm not one the shoot a slug though a (field barrel) which is what you have. Some people will tell you different and say that its ok. I just don't think field barrels can handle the pressure of a slug.

I would say suck it up and spend the money on a rifled barrel. You will be more accurate with this barrel. But I'm just one person. Someone else will tell you different and it won't be the wrong answer their.

congrats on your new purchase. Let us know what you do.

  4. If you can afford a cynergy, BUY A CYNERGY!!!! They are worth the money. If you have $1100. dollars to spend you should easily be able to find her a shotgun that fits. You do get what you pay for. That doesn't mean the more $ is the best way to go. Find what fits and will work the best for her.

  5. The Stoeger is a proven gamble.

I haven't heard much about the CZ one way or the other.

The best reviews I've heard on the $400 class semi-auto have been on the Baikal MP153/Remington SPR453 (same gun - different labeling)

I actually have a MP153 that I bought last year and have yet to fire it.

I might take it to the dove field on Monday just to give it a try.

You have heard good things about the spr453?

  6. I had a 1187 SP back in the early 90's that was a POS jammatic. I still think that the Rem. 870 Wingmaster is one of the classic shotguns of all time though. I won't buy one with a IL though.

I have heard nothing bad about the 870 wingmasters. The wingmasters and the 870 express are to different guns.

  7. Novaking,

Dove hunting like that puts a lot of stress on any gun. Not many pass that test.

As I recall, most folks who use semi-auto's on those trips use Beretta 391's. Great gun.

Nothing wrong with a 391. The few guys I know that went to mexico uses m2.

I know that there really isn't a problem with 1100 or 1187's and there not the bottom of the barrel. Just the things I've seen and heard, I just can't own one.

Everyone has there favorite gun. I don't own a auto, but I would like to have one. I've shot many auto. I've shot an 1187. I liked the way it shot. I've shot many Benelli's. Love them to. Believe it your not but what you hear and see will keep you (me) from trying something for myself. And what I heard and seen is a lot of 1187 guys have problems with there guns. Maybe there not cleaning them right. I don't know all the details.

  8. i guess you didnt see the "50gr JHP". the bullet went clean throught the deer. so did the 30-30. ive only heart shot one deer, i didnt care for raking out chunks of heart and lungs. i never heart shoot a deer anymore. i shoot for the middle of the neck. 2x6s may not simulate a human body, but i like seeing what different ammo does as far as damage & penatration. and the 9mm 147gr jhp, do almost as much damage as the 180gr 357.

Thats what I use now. 147 grain.

  9. I have a friend that when down to mexico to dove hunt and took 3 1187's and came back with zero 1187's. melted all 3 down. I another guy I know as a 1187 and trashs the gun ( doesn't clean it, use wd-40 in the action and the gun runs great. There kinda hit or miss. ( from what I've seen and heard)

  10. What Novaking said. I do not think you will have any problems. I have hand load buckshot loaded at max pressure and almost 2 oz. of lead and have had no problems w/red dot sights. Keep the barrel clean as any plastic in bore will make the slug tumble. I would expect (from a clean gun and from a cool barrel) 3" groups @50 yrds.

And if you don't get 3 inch groups at 50 yards, change your slug, get your eyes checked or don't shoot fo far but than gun should get that easy.

  11. I've got a question you may or may not be able to answer Flick.

I just got a red dot for My SN. Is it going to be hard to sight it in with rifled slugs? I'm gunna sight it in at at 40-50 yards. My guess is, i will be getting around 6" groups once zeroed?

-Tips welcome if you know of any when it comes to zeroing in a red dot on a smooth bore.

recoil might throw off your zero. I saw the picture of your gun (sharp) but I couldn't see who made the red dot. Anyway, start at 15 yards and work back. You will see your groups opening up at you move back. P.S give the barrel time to cool.

  12.

I agree on that one! However, even with good shot placement, things can and do go wrong. Take the death of Officer Coates. That is a perfect example of when an officer does everything right and it all goes wrong.

I am not going to waste time telling the story, but here is a link. It would be wise to use his death as a lesson on underpenetration.

    http://www.odmp.org/officer/420-trooper-mark-hunter-coates

Not listed in the article is the fact that none of the rounds penetrated deep enough to disable major structures within the body. He was using 145gr JHP's (Winchester SIlvertips, a round famous for underpenetration, oddly enough the same round that failed in the Miami shootout, albeit in 9mm). and all of them expanded/fragmented prematurely. Hence again why I am a fan of heavy/slow over fast/light.

Here is an article to read about WHY officer Coates rounds were ineffective, and further dispelling all this "energy dump" BS.

    http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs3.htm

I agree on heavier bullets. I have a 9mm. Its what I have. I would like a .45 but I have kids to pay for. I think what I and others are trying to say is you have to work with what I have. I can't buy an m4 right now and I can't choot 100's of rounds trying to figure out what to shoot. Some people have a single shot break open 20 gauge. That is all they have. Will it work. Yes. ITS BETTER THAN NOTHING. I beleve you know more about this than me but I think its a little much. I beleve HD is keeping yourself and your family away from danger as long as possible and most of all don't pull the trigger if you don't have to.
