  1. In the "4 shots" post I debated wood stocks versus synthetic with Hogwild. Everyone has a preference and in a bolt action I would say synthetic can be more accurate as the bedding matterial is not as reliant on the wood thickness for strength. Aluminum bedding can be molded right into the stock for instance. Weight factors in as well as todays synth. stocks can be ultra light and still be strong. However, for us diehard wood fans who take pride in the astetic appeal of our rifles keeping that wood nice is a problem. Especially if you hunt in a forest environment. I use a fairly cheap matterial called "Camo Form Protective Wrap". It is sold at most hunting shops, Cabela's and specialty shops. It comes off without a residue. It can be purchased in various camo from Realtree to snow. I think it's worth the extra 15 bucks At the range i show off my wood. Hunting I protect it.
  2. Yes they can break. Yes they can scratch. Infact, there is nothing "technically" better with a wood stock than a good synth. Same can be said about a new ford cobra and a farrari 308 but I'll take the 308 thank you. That's why I like wood. Will it out shoot yours? A=NO. Wouldn't trade trade you for anything. (that's just one mans opinion)
  3. I got a .257 Wby. It's not a SMOA. You can't get one in wood. I'm a traditionalist and have to have nice wood. I got a Ultramark. See my profile album. You're right the Wby is more accurate but For moose or pushing bush the benelli .300 with a carbine barrel is quicker to get into action. I never fail to get what I'm hunting so I can afford to let beauty count. Got a small 4 by 4 whitetail yesterday. (post pic later).
  4. funny thing about is any optics sold to the public in the U.S. We Canucks can also buy here. Just can't buy from YOU it would seem. Same goes for rifles. Couple of yrs ago I wanted to buy a beautifull .300 five panel Wby Lazermark, condition perfect, for a great price. Could not get the deal done because of the wall between our two countries. I can go down and buy a brand new one anytime I want. Problem is the wood on most modern rifles is not as beautifull as it was not so long ago and quality, fit and finish was held to a higher degree. Got a new Ultramark .257 instead.
  5. Not sure whos but stock your refering to. Mine or nightforces. If it's mine thanks, I'm pretty proud of it. I love the knot that runs right throgh it. If yer refering to nightforces well then I feel like an idiot. Take-er-easy.

    Need Help

Normally i would not use quick release rings but i bought this gun for moose and that means hiking bush trails, calling in swamp lands and so forth. The point is this. Have you ever tried to aquire an animal in a scope at 10-15 yrds in brush. I expected to hunt mostly with open sights thus no scope. I did want to have the scope available for times when it was more practical. This was my first time useing quick release rings (NOT BASES). I was told the bases where iffy. The rings where reported to be reliable and so far they have been. I put my gun together. Attached the scope and shot my moose center, in the head. can't beat that.
  7. ;)Consider this your own private ring. No need to hijack now. Have-at-er.

    Need Help

glad everthing is right again. Don't worry. I have a .300 as well. I have quick release rings and use them often. I always store my gun in the original case meaning i take it apart. Not once has it failed to hold zero through all this.
  9. I guess your limited to only two pics. I really like this gun and wanted to include a third so i cheated and stuck it here.
  10. I used leupold quick release mounts with a vortex viper 3-9. I want to use my open sites on my 20 inch carbine barrel when I am pushing bush or walking heavily wooded areas of which we have in abundance. I have never lost zero with them. Only draw back was the hight I had to mount my scope to clear the bell with my rear iron site. As a moose gun it is a great little combination. I don't need the slip on recoil pad for recoil but at 6 ft 4 I like the extra length of pull it gives me. I already have the optional larger factory pad on it.
  11. I feel like I'm getting between an unhappily married couple but I did want to say those reviews were great. I do think they are bias to a point but most reviews I have read will point out weak points as well. The second one was good reading. Encouraging. I only stop by here once or twice a month to see if anything new is out and about. I own an argo el (european version r1). It's nice to read good reviews. Thanks Nightforce. Now stop fighting uze two.
  12. I have a wood stock but that should not make a difference. My forestock does not actually touch my barrel. Any pressure on my barrel is transfered by the gas port collector attached to the barrel and tightly fitted over the gas port. This presure point cannot be eliminated. The forestock does nothing to interfere with barrel. P.S. some guns are designed such that they need presure points to eliminate harmonic vibrations. Some guns are better completly free floated. Weatherby for instance has deliberate presure points that are actually benificial. Does the presure created by the gas port collector hinder the R1? I couldn't tell you. I can tell you that you would not have a semi auto without it. Tucker = Troll - I don't know about that. Trolls are pretty negative fellows and my first post here was not very pleasant (see post called, "NOW I"M WORRIED"). He didn't shoot me for it. Troll? Nah, I don't think so.
  13. I wanted to post pics of my moose. Shot with an Argo El .300 win mag. (european version of R1). I can't figure out how to add pics from my album so you'll have to go to my album on this site to see this moose. 100yrds. Shot in the head. 15 min. of legal hunting time left in the day. On private road. think i got er
  14. My .300 holds 3 in the mag. 1 in the chamber. If I miss after that I'll just throw my gun at em. Nice group there C..9. Even if you did miss the dime:rolleyes:

    Evaluation

Congrats on your R1. Lots of positive feedback. That's what we like to here. Good luck this hunting season. Mike
  16. I would be scared to sacrifice some accuracy with a clamp on. I use a telescopic rest stick on the forestock. No danger of disturbing barrel harmonics. I can also put the stick away when in the bush and the bi pod doesn't catch in the branches. It may not look as cool but i think it is more practical. Especially as u can not attach it directly to the forestock. By the way. I came on site to announce that my benelli argo el shot its first game. I went to the range today to sight it in and what do you know. A small five point (10 point for some of u) was eating at the 200 yrd mark. We have a small community range with only a handfull of users. I have rarely seen someone else there when i went. Therefore it's not strange to have a buck on the range. It aint there now. Well excuse me all. I got some cuttin to do.
  17. what in the bleep is wrong with Ddan. Speach impediment or something?
  18. Does anyone know of a replacement trigger for the R1. I have checked jewel and timney. No luck there.
  19. I have the 300 r1 for moose and bear. I would say that other than the elk you listed the 300 is somewhat over kill. I would recomend the 270 as an all around go to gun. Great for elk. Not too small for moose and black bear. It would be my "one gun only" choice. I have a 257 wby mag for the critters u list.
  20. Does anyone know what marandy has going on with his post. Is it safe to check or is it virus? It looks pretty wierd
  21. Others have done gun cleaning vids on you tube but no autos that I have seen. If tucker301 did such a video he would have at least one interested view in me. I think it's a great idea. If you do it let us know...byfernow
  22. Just thought I'd comment on my Argo El now that I have put some rounds through the tube......Yeah! That should do...No scope on it yet but grouping pretty darn good for open sights and I have not used open sights since I was a kid with a .22 plinker. Too soon to comment on long term reliabilty but for sheer fun it is fantastic. Byfernow
  23. OLGA . .You mention you called the (Benelli) guys in Canada. I too am a Canadian and tried to find a rep. in Canada. I was directed to Stoeger in Ontario by the Benelli armi web site Italy. I have not contacted them yet and wonder if this is the reps. you refered to or is there a better option? I know some of these web sites have not been upgraded in some time. Would apreciate some feed back thanks.
  24. anybody tell me what the twist rate is for the R1 300win mag? More specifically in a 20 inch carbine barrel. Info would be appreciated. Thanks.
