brad_pro
i have been looking at getting my wife a decent 20 gauge semi auto for mostly trap shooting with a bit of duck, goose, and phesent shooting. she is by no means a small lady but she is not very strong and gets fatigued quickly when shooting my 12 gauge 870 wingmaster classic trap. After about 2 rounds of trap shooting she can no longer hold the gun up. I am looking at either a benelli M2, a benelli montefeltro, franchi 720, a beretta 391 urika 2 or anyother semi autos that you guys can sugest that weigh in under 7.5 lbs are . i am wondering which one will be the lightest recoiling with the lighest weight and also which one will require the least maintence. and if anybody knows of a way to convert a stoeger model 2000 to 20 gauge let me know. that would solve all
Novaking
391. lightest recoil of all you listed. If you said hunting first and a little trap. I would say m2 novaking
splashtx556ftw
a friend of mine just got his wife a Charles Daly 20. recoil was moderate till we got it broke in. now its pretty sweet. for $279.00 for an automatic, its hard to beat. comes with 3 choke tubes, and i would put mt C/D 12 up against any auto on the market. it doesnt kick as hard as my Franchi AL-48. ive had it 5yrs without a single problem.and its had 1000s of rounds run through it. i posted a pick of it on the franchi forum. under "my babies". now my Q is,.... has she shot anything? and what does SHE want?? brad_pro
novaking why would u say the M2 if hunting was the first prioirty? and what do u have to say about the charles daly shotguns. and what about the franchi 720 isent that gas operated as well as the 391 so wouldnt it have about the same kick or would it have more just because of weight
brad_pro
well splash she has shot a 391 urika 12 gauge and a 390 but the owner of the gun had them weighted down very hevily as they were trap guns and he was an older gentalman and didnt like release triggers. she liked them because they had no kick but were heavy and what does your friends wifes charles daly weigh? but on another note what kind of opperation is a charles daly gas, inertia, or recoil. will that c/d take 3 inch 20 gauge loads

brad_pro
do thoes charles dalys have magazine cutoffs and does anybody know anything about escort shotguns my local dealer carries them but he hasent heard anything about them
Novaking
The m2 is a great shot. Lightweight. I had a charles daly once. I loved the way it felt but I had to send it off three times for repair in 6 months, so I sold it to my dad. My dad loves it and hasn't had any problems since. I don't know alot about the 720's. They are gas and they will be lighter recoil than the m2. Have you looked at escort shotguns. http://www.legacysports.com/products/escort/escort_semiauto.html I've heard good thing about those guns as well. They are in the same range ($) as the charles daly. good luck novaking
splashtx556ftw
her C/D 20 weighs around 6 1/2 lbs, its chambered for 3". their gas operated. its really a good feeling gun in your hands. and they arent bad to look at either.black matte finish, black or camo synthetic stock and foregrip. did you check out the pics of mine?? brad_pro
yes novaking i have looked at the escorts i really like them in that they are cheap and seem to be a good gun if anybody knows more about them i would love to hear about them i want to tear one apart side by side with a beretta and a charles daly and see how similar they are. and does anybody know about any shows or demo events that benelli or anyother gun manufactuer has where you can shoot the guns before you buy
Novaking
I know when Tom Knapp does his shows, there is a Benelli rep. there. The rep. has 7-8 benelli's you can try and when Tom is done with his show he lets you shoot his guns. Go to http://www.tomknapp.net and check his schedule novaking

The laws of physics definitely apply. A Montefeltro youth with a Kick eez Trap Dude would be a good choice. Or, your looking at a 28ga, or .410 O/U's and some reloading. splashtx556ftw
while recoil is an issue, sometimes its worth it.i love shooting my AL-48 Franchi 20ga. but it does kick the crap out of me. when i got my Charles Daly 12, it was kicking harder than the 20. but since i got it broke in ,it has softened up quite a bit. but i have shot no gun that is as much fun to shoot as my wifes 410 o/u. and i can bust just as many clays with it as i can my 12 or 20. tucker301
Lightweight= more recoil. The laws of physics definitely apply. What he said. You cannot get a featherweight gun and expect it to not kick. You can add mercury reducers and make it heavier and that will reduce recoil, but then you have a heavier gun anyway. brad_pro
what is a kick eez trap dude?
ben dover
i would look at the 20 gauge cordoba as well. This is what my 5'2" 121lb wife shoots for all around shooting. The recoil is less than the M2 due to the porting. The shims and avaialbility of shorter/longer recoil pads makes it nice for her to shoot in a t shirt or with a heavy coat. brad_pro
thanks dover i have taken something that u said and added it in with the escorts, dalys, and the montefeltros, the porting, if i got that montefeltro or the m2 and had it ported i would save about 500 dollars and still have a very good gun. nova king i would very much like to hear your oppinion on this idea if it is good or not. i found a dealer near me that carries all the guns that i am interested in and he said that he would be more then happy to tear them apart with me and show me the differences between the similar ones like the beretta and the dalys and the escorts. so i will let u all know what i find out when i go there this weekend. DocGP
My son (11yr) LOVES the Ultralight 20. I haven't shot it much yet, but it weighs just a tad under 5lbs I think. He isn't at all intimidated by the recoil. Sure is a sweet little gun!!! My 12ga UL eats anything I feed it. I have no reason to doubt the little 20. Doc I'm sorry, edit to add; 5.2 lbs empty, probably 5.5 loaded.
splashtx556ftw
contrary to poular belief, porting doesnt do that much to reduce recoil. its been proven by guns&ammo.
Novaking
porting helps with barrel flip a bit. But with shotguns, I don't think it helps with recoil. I mean what can you afford? How much is your wife going to shoot it? If your going to put thousands of rounds a year though it, I would go with a beretta, browning, or benelli product. If she is going to fire 500 to 1000 rounds a year, a daly, escort, or a "cheaper" gun would be just fine. But if you read other posts on this site, it all boils down to what she is comfortable with. good luck and let us know novaking
splashtx556ftw
aw heck. get er a 10ga and watch er spin like a top....just dont give er more than 1 shell. the second would likly be aimed at you:D
brad_pro
that is a good one i will have to see about that splash it would be pretty funny wouldnt it. and thank u for telling me that novaking and she wont be putting more then about 1000 rounds through it a year heck i would make a bet that about 300 a year tops for her anyway but i wouldnt mind going and breaking a few clays but yea no more then 1000 rounds and i will go to a dealer which carries both and we will see which one fits her the best
Novaking
I have a SPR 310 O/U 12 gauge. I put about 2000 rounds a year though it and zero problems. the gun cost me 399.00 and I put about 150.00 in it after two year owning the gun. So your looking 550 for an O/U. Is it a browning or Franchi or Beretta. NO!! But I'm averaging 23 on the skeet field and I can limit 15 dove with 20 shells. What ever she is comfortable with novaking
