I agree. I shot 3 in #2's last year and 3 in. #3's last year. Both were steel shot.

8 out of 10 correct. I've never shot a black duck (don't think we have them California?) and couldn't tell what that last one was. Thanks for sending that link.

Good to know those work well. I was always curious how well those worked. How do you adjust the positions? If it's a twist and click type of adjustment, have you ever had any problems with it twisting into the wrong position?

I'm sure you received your copy of DU's magazine today. They stated that there has been no reported cases of humans contracting the disease from wild birds anywhere in the world. The article also says there is no evidence that the virus is present in North America in either wild or domestic birds. Great news!

You'll have to keep us posted as to how well this product works. Makes sense, but I'm curious if it works.

I have a Briley light modified that I use for dove, pheasant, and duck. It works well. www.briley.com

Wait until you have your shotgun in your hands!

Tucker - noticed the post about illegal immigration is gone. What's that about?

That's a scary thing. Let's hope it doesn't make its way over here, although I fear it's just a matter of time before it does.

Other than not getting one stuck in the first place? I've heard of soaking the end of your barrel and choke tube in a finish friendly lubricant. After a day of soaking, try removing it. I had a Stoeger 2000 choke tube that was removed with a pair of vice grips one we got the choke tube out far enough to grab. If it's too difficult to remove after a day of soaking, take it to a gunsmith. I'm sure there are other suggestions out there, so wait a day or two for other responses.

As with many other products, you get what you pay for! Buy a used Benelli or other reputable brand (Browning or Beretta).

Did you happen to get one of those fine looking coots mounted? Maybe a flying pair? I'll bet that would look nice on the wall.

I would check with someone who has patterned a 26" and 28" inch barrel. If I remember correctly (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!), there is no difference on the performance of the gun (one doesn't shoot any further or tighter than the other), it's whatever feels better to you. When shooting ducks out of blind with shrubs or tules around you, I prefer a shorter barrel.
-
I would suggest a 26 inch barrel for duck hunting. I have a 26 inch Stoeger 2000 that is easy to get out of the blind and on those fast flying teal.

I don't have any pics but did better this year than the past two or three years. I only went out on 10 or so trips. Shot a limit on two of the trips and shot two banded birds, one of which was so worn I could only read three numbers. I'm sending it back to Maryland to have them acid wash it. Shot a variety of birds - mallards, pintails, teal, and a few widgeon. The season just ended in California and I'll be heading down to Mexico in a couple of weeks to shoot the ones I missed!

I hunt in California where the weather doesn't get too nasty. I use Cabela's 3 mm stockingfoot waders ($50) and a great pair of Cabela's shoes ($50). They are comfortable to walk in and I've never had my boots pop off, as is the case with waders that have the boots attached. I've had them for 5 years with no problems. Several of my friends have breathable waders that they purchased from Cabelas. They look more comfortable (they breath and are not as tight). I might purchase a set next year if they don't have any problems.

I use a Sims slip on with no problems. In fact, it helps manage the recoil and helps me get on that duck for a second shot.

I get the majority of my ducks smoked at a place in Sac. called Morants Sausage Kitchen. Mudhen may know of this place, living close to Sac. If not, I highly recommend getting a few birds smoked. With some crackers, cheese, and a cold one, it's great! I breasted out my ducks this year and I'm going to make sausages with my wife's uncle. Some guys I know take their ducks to an Asian restraunt to have them cooked or roast them in the oven and put a tasty sauce on it. You can even try making jerkey or have someone do it for you. Try a butcher or place that makes sausages. For recipes check out DU web page or hunt fish cook. [ 01-18-2006, 10:04 PM: Message edited by: NateDog ]

I have an 870 supermag. It will hold 3 1/2 inch shells for that occasional goose or turkey hunt. It's a great gun and I've never had any problems with it. That being said, I also have a Stoeger 2000 and love having a semi auto for duck hunting. I'll use my 2000 over my 870 (for duck hunting) every time.

I had a pattermaster on my Remington 870. I have mixed opinions about the pattermaster. I don't think it's the best choke for waterfowl unless all you are shooting at high flyers and big birds. I hunt in California where we get a mix of ducks, big and small. Some decoy well, others don't. The patternmaster is great for those mallards or pintails that are up there. It's too tight of a choke for teals, widgeon, and smaller ducks. I used my Briley light modified on my 2000 for a couple of hunts. I can't miss with this choke! I purchased the duck commander, extended and ported choke from Midwest Gun Supply for $30, 50% of the normal price.

I just purchased a Briley light modified that works well on my 2000.

I've never hunted down south but the duck hunting is going well in the Sac valley. My brother in law hunts dove somewhere near the CA/Arizona border and limits out in 30 minutes. They camp out and spend two days down there. Wish I had more info. for you. I would check out the refuges as Mudhen suggested. Good luck.

I own a Stoeger 2000 and don't know if this applies to your new SBE II or not. Take your gun apart and clean it. Shoot 3 or 4 boxes of ammo of heavy loads through it (at least 1 1/8 oz). If it still has problems, try different ammo. Good luck.

I purchased a Briley light modified last week. It should be here next week. I'll let you know how it works in a couple of months. I plan on using it for duck/dove hunting down in Mexico. I currently use Kent fast steel #2 for ducks with a modified choke. It does the job.

I'm 6'2" and purchased a 26 inch barrel. I wouldn't change anything about the barrel length. It's not the length that's important, it's how you use it.
