  1. It was a golf ball. He must hate golf almost as much as I do And anytime you can keep three or four empties in the air, within inches of each other - you're FAST
  2. This would be my guess. BTW, how does the licensing work there with the river being the border? Here, between NC and VA, fishing licenses are reciprocal, but you have to buy non-resident hunting licenses to cross the border, even if by water.
  3. Including video of Jimmy Houston "hunting" deer as they run into fences. http://www.real-hunters.com/bellar-trial-video.cfm
  4. To my knowledge, no one makes a neutral locking plate, but it appears that it would be a pretty simple thing to fabricate. Hard way would be with some plate stock, a drill, and a dremel or grinder. Possibly more easily accomplished with a pirhanna. If I get some free time at work this week, I just may give it a shot.
  5. Just about any single shot bolt will shoot all lengths. Savage Arms makes some of the most accurate bolt actions for the money. TheRemington 552 semi-automatic handles all three as well.
  6. Click the edit button and give it another shot.
  7. Just a reminder. IdahoDucker, I don't see you on here. How's skidaho going to know where all of your best spots are without a starting point?
  8. Those appear to be pheasants in the drawing. They were hunting quail.

    Handloads

Full Rewind: Handloading is most advantageous for those who do it themselves. In order to achieve maximum benefit, the handloader typically spends considerable time and effort working up the ultimate pet load. I prefer to fire-form cases using factory ammo expended during barrel break-in. Fire-forming expands the exterior dimensions of the brass so that the case more uniformly fits your chamber. For competitions, back in the day, I would even index the cases so that they would be chambered exactly the same way each time they were fired. This insured that any imperfections in the chamber always re-aligned with the expanded case. After fire-forming, the handloader begins looking for that sweet spot that every barrel (at least in theory) has. It's where the harmonics created by the round passing through the barrel are at a repeatable minimum, so that every shot has an equal optimal chance of striking the target at the same spot - provided that the shooter does his part. Using an OAL gauge, the handloader can determine the proper depth at which to seat the bullets into the case. Typically, most agree that it's best to seat about 10-20 thousandths off the lands, but some rifles shoot well with the bullet just touching the lands. Most factory loads are seated well of the lands and then crimped. This allows them to feed properly and safely into every manufacturer's chamber without jamming. The crimping keeps the seated bullet in place through rough handling and rapid feeding in semi-autos. Most handloaders only crimp if loading for semi-autos. Otherwise, it's not needed. Deep seating allows the bullet to "jump" out of the case when fired. Jump occurs when the bullet travels a few thousandths without being engaged by the rifling. This free space allows each bullet to misalign itself slightly as it enters the rifling, and accuracy suffers. Now, using the fire-formed cases, the handloader begins finding the right combination of powder and bullet that make this rifle shoot well. This involves a lot of trial and error as loads are tested throughout the range of min. to max. from the manuals. A "hot" load is useless if it will not hit the intended target. Some of my best shooters have been just above the published minimums. Having some else handload for you, and doing it right, could be VERY expensive. It's very labor intensive when done correctly. If you don't want to load your own, I'd suggest trying different factory loads until you find one that works well in your rifle. If you want to take elk at 300 yards, then you must practice shooting vital zone sized targets at that range until you are confident in your ability to repeatedly hit the target. Balloons make great practice targets at long ranges. [ 02-18-2006, 10:30 AM: Message edited by: tucker301 ]
  11. Well, almost. The case need only fit the chamber, which is obviously part of the barrell. Different calibers, long and short action alike, use different bolt head sizes. For example: 300WM and 7mmRM are the same bolt head. 30-06 fits 25-06 and .270. 22-250, 243, and 308 are also interchangeable bolt heads. But bolt heads are not the only issue when changing barrels on a repeater. The magazine must also accomodate the cartridge cases in order to feed properly. In short, it goes something like this. 1. The barrell must be chambered for a specific caliber. 2. The bolt head family size must match. 3. The magazine must be able to accomodate the case. 12. I'll just reiterate what mudhen stated above. The last two (we can only hope) posts by MASTERASS were nonsensical drivel. I figured he'd suffered a slight stroke or was drunk off his arse. As for you gdf7385, after 6 months of lurking, choosing to jump into the middle of a fray and siding with a lunatic shows some pretty poor judgement on your part. Perhaps it should have been 6 months and one more day?
  13. ...and I just realized that the most important question has not been answered yet. Did Cheney get the bird?
  14. The topic has been discussed many, many times here. Use the search feature and read all about it. Just like on a male figure skater, your poll is ineffective and useless.
  15. Why should he get in truble, or trouble? It was an accident. Bad, and could have been worse, but still an accident.
  16. I like the Browning Buckmark. and the Neos, by Beretta
  17. Oh yeah. Almost forgot. I vote "none".
  18. OK. Here's the deal. 1. Read Mudhen's response to the same question posed by you earlier today. I'm going out on a limb and assuming you'll somehow manage to stumble back into this discussion. Perhaps to check the results of your poll? 2. Your poll makes no sense and merely affirms assumptions I'd already made. 3. We should all write to our representatives and petition them to pass legislation making gun and computer ownership only available to those who have passed a simple skills and knowledge test.
  19. You forgot to mention that Benelli has yet to adopt the ICTSSA (International Choke Tube Standard Size Agreement), so their tubes may not fit your Iver Johnson or Ted Williams And the recoil reduction system reduces the felt recoil of an extremely lightweight Inertia shotgun. The gun will still kick, and it may even kick more than your 15 yr. old 12.5 lb. BrownRemChester gas gun.
  20. Likwid, It's hard for anyone to judge the situation without having been present. All of your listed points are, of course, fundamentally sound. But if there's one thing I've learned in over 30 years of hunting - and life in general, it's that shiat happens. Simply put, this was an accident. There was probably a fractional amount of error on the part of everyone involved, including the VP. Was the guide doing his/her job in making sure that all parties were accounted for before the covey was approached and flushed? Did Whittington wander off and then wander back through tall grass, coming up behind the group, without announcing his return? Did Cheney, while swinging on a fast-moving target, make sure there was nothing popping into the sight picture at the last second? I don't know. I wasn't there. None of us were. I know something like this can and does happen. Luckily, it has never occured around me. If it did, I think I'd feel badly enough, without having Monday AM QB's trying to piece the situation back together and determine whether or not I acted usnafely or negligently.
  21. Looks like someone didn't do their homework before making the purchase. In addition to easily finding the information on the net, it would have been a pretty simple exercise to take one of your existing tubes to the dealer for a trial fit before the purchase. I'm not sure exactly what it is that Benelli is supposed to put on their site to inform customers as to whether or not the chokes they have at home in their gun safe will fit their new Benelli. How would that read? "Caution: Choke tubes furnished with this gun may or may not interchange with existing tubes from other makes and models". Does the muffler from Expedition fit your wife's Mustang? Does Ford disclose this on their website, or is it something they assumed you'd know, or at least research if it was an issue?
  22. Whether the politician is crooked or not, he is a public figure, and more importantly, he is a public servant. I agree that the story deserves attention and that the FACTS should be reported. The problem is that the news business has become insanely competitive adn biased, and producers/reporters are going to extreme measures to overhype even the most mundane of stories. Remember the morning news program that showed the woman in the canoe, paddling through the flooded streets? Remember how ridiculous she looked when some guy walked by her and disclosed that the water was ankle deep? When CNN showed a reporter emptying the contents of a 12 ga. 000 buckshot, to demonstrate what a shotgun shell, "similar to the one Cheney fired" looks like, they crossed over from reporting the news to fabricating it. What they did is no different than using a cruise missile to demonstrate how JFK was shot. If it';s not accurate, then it's inaccurate. And if it's inaccurate, it should not be reported as news. So, if I were a politician, crooked or not, I would seek a friendly news service to be the means by which I tell my side of the story. The news media has the ear of every voter in this country. They are easily the most powerful political force in America, if not the entire world. They should be obligated to report the facts as they are, and to leave the editorials on the editorial page.
