  1. This was one of the most fun hunts I have ever been on. I can't recall a hunt where I watched the whole thing unfold right in front of my eyes. 21#, 10.5" beard, 1" spurs. SBE II, Primos Jellyhead, Win XR 6's. The bird dropped like a rock. mudhen - CA
  2. That's pretty much your call. I can't say I notice much of a difference, but unless I'm at the patterning board, I don't notice recoil much in general. It might be worth installing a X-Coil or Limbsaver on the non-CT SBE II though. mudhen - CA
  3. I have found it to be very effective. Very. Effective. No complaints from these guys:
  4. FF is not acceptable to me - the pattern is too open for my liking. If you are certain that all of your shots will be relatively close, then it will probably work fine. That gun should like almost any good quality .660 turkey choke. Carlson, Kicks, Primos Tightwad or Jellyhead, etc. The Benelli turkey choke is made by Trulock I think and should be very good. I would think almost any good turkey ammo will do. Do a search here - we talk about this all the time.
  5. XR 6's killing birds at 40 yards is a non-issue. I get complete pass through on live heads at 40 and beyond. XR 6's will penetrate skin at 140 yards. The Fed HW 7's and XR 6's are blowing my target boards over at 40 yards. I do shoot 51013 Nitro, but I think relying on 20-25 #4's could be a bit risky. If one is worried about knockdown power at longer distances, it might be better to try larger shot like HS/XR 5's or even 4's. Lots of guys are going to Nitro straight loads as well. Next year I'm going to try some Nitro straight 6's & 7's. I'm even toying with a 20 ga turkey gun for 2008 using Nitro straight 7's.
  6. You don't get it. This is an extremely common sales practice. Primos sells primarily to dealers and distributors. Their website is set up as an accomodation to the few retail customers who can't or don't want to use the normal routes to buy their products. Primos is not trying to compete with their customers, so the website retail price has to be higher than their regular customer's prices. Most manufacturers that sell retail on their websites use at least MSRP. If the Primos website was cheaper than Bass Pro Shops, would BPS keep buying Primos products? The Jellyhead has become a bit whored out though.... mudhen - CA
  7. Does it matter? We all are free to make choices in life. I drive a Subaru. My friends drive $40,000 monster trucks. I have no children. No cable TV (saves about $1000/yr). I have spent many nights sleeping in a rental car before an early hunt. I've eaten many meals of 12 hour old pizza at Casey's. I kill birds on private land, mostly trespass hunts. I kill many birds on public land out of state. I select states with cheap tags and/or over the counter tags. There's lots of ways to skin a turkey I spend a pretty good sum on a waterfowl lease as well. I choose to hunt as much as possible before I take my last dirt nap....
  8. 3.5" only. I've killed several birds with just a few pellets. I figure I can use all the pellets that my gun can put on the target.
  9. No. I don't shoot any Remington shotgun ammo at this time.
  10. Urban legend. Debunked by many in the shooting industry. Might have applied to the older slower loads though.
  11. Yes. They are the best shells that work in my SBE II. They have been out for several years. 5-6 states, tags, trespass fees, 20-25 hunts, flights, rental cars, hotels, $1500 shotguns, etc. I spend $100 on each trip to the patterning board. Does $55 for ten great shells ($29 at Bass Pro - $40 at high dealer) even phase me You gotta be kidding......
  12. This year I played around with all sorts of other guns, chokes, loads, etc. But as usual, the Benelli just keeps winning my favor when turkey season comes around. SBE II, B Shim, Primos Jellyhead .660, and 3.5" Winchester XR 6's. The patterning board was just getting hammered! The H-13 was a bit affected by the wind. I may not get a bird, but it won't be the gun's fault
  13. Bingo This person obviously has done the field work and is 110% correct based on what I have experienced from real testing over the past 18 years of shooting Benellis and working with shims. I don't give a rat's arse what anyone says about POI not changing with shims changes. It does. Period. I'm not talking about scopes, red dots, lasers, etc. I'm talking about just the factory beads. We had this whole discussion last year. The naysayers driveled on for a bit and then disappeared as usual. Just like Johnny, I can make my patterns go up and down like clockwork. Good replies guys. It's nice to see posts from guys who actually shoot the guns being discussed
  14. Not too bad for lead 5's at 40. The Feds appear to be hitting low. The Wins look a bit thin. That 76 is not so great. I'd try the Win XR 6's to get more pellets that hit as hard, if not harder, than lead 5's. I was putting 180-220 XR 6's and Fed HW 7's in the ring at 40 yards all day today.
  15. More pellets. Better pattern. #6's have plenty of power out to 40. If you are certain you need to shoot 50, then maybe 5's or 4's might be better. Some of the new non-tox can really hammer past 40. I shot some Win XR's today and the targets were just getting hammered.
  16. Sorry, but I know little about the Stoeger. I would probably start with a Primos Tightwad and 3" Winchester HV #6's. I shot the HV's for many years before moving up to XR's and Federal HW's. I would not be happy with less than 150+ pellets in the 10" at 40 yards with #6's of any kind. This is the minimum that I find acceptable, but they are #7's:
  17. I've got one on E-Bay - it's at $77 right now - Advantage Timber NIB... mudhen - CA
  18. http://www.nwtf.org/message_board/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=shotguns&Number=318112&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=all Lots of good guys at N W T F boards, but I just don't get this post. Guy buys an Optima Plus Indian Creek choke for his Xtrema II. Someone told him it fit the Super Nova, so he goes out and buys a Super Nova without checking out that info. Now he blames Benelli for all the ensuing problems. Maybe I'm just too dense, but I don't get it I'd love to hear any comments from you smart guys.
  19. I shoot Hevi Steel at small ducks like teal and widgeon. They work well on early season sprig too. It's not an overly powerful load, but it seems to get the job done most of the time. I use heavier shot for later season birds. mudhen - CA
  20. I shoot all sorts of shells: 3" Hevi Steel #4's EM Hevi Shot #6's Rem Hevi Shot #2, #4, #6's (not anymore though) 3" Fed Steel #2's & #3's For the upcoming season, I will probably order several cases of EM Hevi Shot in #2, #4, & #6.
  21. For turkey, I use only 3.5". The 3.5" patterns are so much better than 3" in my guns. The recoil does not bother me much as I don't shoot more than 100 or so turkey loads per year. For waterfowl, I rarely use 3.5". The main reason is that the birds are usually so close that I don't need many extra pellets. I'm also shooting many cases of waterfowl shells per year, so I don't really need the extra recoil.
  22. For $200, it had better come with a lifetime warranty
  23. Four, maybe five states. Three guns still being tested. Five or six loads are still under review. Lots more shooting to do before the seasons start...
  24. .660. Not as severe. No. N/A. Yes.
  25. I don't think one set will fit all four of the guns you listed. What part # is your stock? 60015 is black for SBE II/M2 83160 is Timber 83159 is Max 4 The forearm might interchange with all four guns, but the stock does not. Pretty sure the SBE I/M1 had/have their own Steadygrip style and part #'s.
