If that's #1 son ... than your twin barrel must be the red headed step child of the family eh?
  4. Wulf - sorry that you had to go through the situation you did .. not easy I can Imagine!..and at this point can only Imagine .. What I failed to say before that I was hesitant to do for feeling long winded already (and opening a can of worms), was that a person should enroll in a self defense training course when they make the decision to chose a firearm to aid in their personal defense whether it be concealed carry or home defense. This may sound like a follow-up now to wulfs misfortunate situation he endured but, is somethingthat should be considered when making this decision. Personally, I have yet to do this and should take my own advice first of all but, given my locale and living situation with three overly protective Drathars in the house I have felt less of a need to do so. to simply trail off into a tangent was not my intentions. .. .. sorry fellas. I'll step out of this one and keep my opinions a bit closer to what I know .. bird hunting and a little of something else ..
  5. hey there .. if the gun came with the factory extended choke tube (turkey) give it a try first. loads will vary from gun to gun so you'll have to do some experimenting with a few at first. Generally the big three shotshell manufacturers have designated turkey loads for you to choose from and #6 shot seems to be the ticket .. start with those first and paper test the loads out to 30yrds to see how things look. If you try Hevi-shot you can almost expect an immediated improvement in pattern densities. hope this helps ... good luck

another awsome pic fezman.. he's a good lookin' boy! that's very comendable you're taking him around like you are! cudos my freind!
  7. good point fezman ... just another thing to be sceptical of ... I prefer to think things out on my own and what I've seen from Guns & Ammo's 'expert test groups' is sort of a joke. most recently : take a look at page 30 in the Feburary issue and ask yourself what's wrong with this picture(s)... If I remember correctly, their so called 'expert test group' is shooting .22 cal rifles at water filled milk jugs on top of cinder blocks....!?!? This is something my 12yr old nephew knows not to do. last night I was enjoying a few beers with my neighbor who is an ex-marine and ex-law enforcement and threw the question at him.. shotgun or side arm for home/self defense? He replied, "...side arm with-out a doubt." Suprisingly I got the same answer from my father a while back who's an ex-military pilot. Both stated the same things - ease of use and speed. anywho ... take care and good luck in your quest.
  8. XtremeDBF - what you're asking is that one gun excel at everything in an industry that produces and concentrates their efforts to individual situations ... this is why there are soo many different models available through the spectrum. you need to do some research!!! If the primary purpose of this gun is going to be shooting clays as you stated. Then looking at a pistol gripped gun with an 18" barrel with ghost ring sights is drug related!! If you look into the shootiong sports you mentioned, 99.9% of the guns consist of automatics and O/U's dressed with 28" - 30" ported barrels (some wearing 32") riding on a design built specifically for this purpose. Emphasizing balance, feel, and comfort to aid in split second target accusition and prolonged shooting situations as the clay sports offer. Now I'm no self-defense guru but, from what I do know and understand these guns are typically elongated bulky pistols carrying more crap on them than needed... my personal opinion of course! Since I have a hard time understanding where any scatter gun used in the confines of a home with the usual room size under 8 yrds in any direction but, more along the lines of 6 yards or less needs any sort of sighting system ... and unless you're trained for moving through a house with a 10lb yard stick shouldered or have forseen yourself in the next action thriller, this will probably be a detriment rather than an advantage. My opinion is stick with an automatic pistol for home defense... tried and true Glocks and 1911 models with a practical chambering that you can handle easily or Berettas 92/96 models - 9mm & 40 S&W respectively. Think about what you're actually going to be doing with your shotgun ... you mention shooting sports to be your primary objective and reason for this purchase...so look at buying a sport model. Although any of them will serve the purpose besides a factory set-up SBE if your shooting sub 1oz. loads ... some are set up differently and may 'fit' you better. You are going to have to be the judge of this. There isn't an auto that Benelli makes that won't fill the bill .. just some that will do it better .. the one's that fit. for what it's worth .... Good Luck [ 02-07-2004, 03:19 PM: Message edited by: birddog ]
  9. hey guys ....what you're actually 'feeling' is the balance points with the Mossberg being more muzzle heavy due to the larger bore diameter and the way the beefier fore relates this... gun to gun (barrel length) comparisons the Benelli's are actually heavier...but were talkin' an ounce or two. for what its worth... 10. I hope that these pics are as close as I'll ever come to starrin' down the muzzle of one of those things ....
  11. I ran into this quote the other day at Robar Companies Inc. gunsmiths in Pheonix, AZ and thought it interesting: Quote by Sir Henry Royce, co-founder of Rolls Royce: "Take the best and make it better. If it doesn't exist, create it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough. Sixteen years ago Robar 'operated' on a Remington 870 for me, taking one of the best and making it better." 12. Ok.. fake punt. It's all so clear to me now. taking fezmans advice and finding a few things here and there then looking at my brothers Monte.... it sounds as if your recoil spring is worn out and short cycling causing the second shell to 'sneak' into the reciever. It's been recomended by one of the guys here that a Wolffe spring (not factory) is the way to go and a yearly cleaning and use of synthetic lubricant on the recoil spring is key. You may want to replace the hammer spring and magzine spring while you're at it since its been around the block a few times. But my moneys on the recoil spring being your main concern/problem. hope this helps...Good luck.

sounds like Duncan should be on a Life cereal commercial opposite of Mikey (Doc). "I'm not gonna try it..let's get Mikey" Is Duncan a Wiem too?
  14. cool beans ... sounds like he didn't know what hit 'em too ... 30yrds is a good range... were ya shakin' a bit?
  15. thanks all!! ....with the aid of a few bottles of early times and 6 space heaters.. I made it through yesterday. I'd love to be able to tell you guys that I snapped and lit'er up but a friend of mine came over with the heaters and got me out ice fishing. When I returned @ 11:30pm a message from the contractors office said," sorry for this inconvienience but the entire service and installation staff is on company outing this weekend. If you still need assistance they will be returning on sunday evening after the super bowl....". Even after that I just wasn't quite 'full' enough to lock and load. pardon the whinnig however ... good advice!! thnx again!
  16. just wondering which gun and load I should use on my furnace ... here's the conditions: house is 6 months old -18 degrees outside 52 degrees inside HVAC contractor isn't responding to calls Hears the delemna .... - I can't decide whether to shoot the F#*$%!>@ thing with: a new unproven 673 350mag w/200grn a hand-me-down custom .375 H&H w/270grn, an Ithaca model 10 10ga. w/T-shot, -or- do I go with the SBE and fill'er full of #4 Hevi-shot????
  17. try here www.benellidealer.com
  18. your best bet is to take 'er to a gunshop/smith and have them run the #'s through their books. I haven't seen anyone here that's been able to reference #'s so you might be better off just poppin' in to a shop one of these days to pick their brains.
  19. just a couple cents here ... Unless your going to handload so you can assure you're getting the correct and most effective wad -specifically gas seal- that will be needed to utilize the 835 ulti-mag's 12ga barrel (which is overbored to the diameter of a 10ga). If the wrong wad is used in the load, blow-by (rapid depressurization) will occur making your load not to reach its said balistics. * In other words fail * Stick with the Nova if you plan not to handload or if you can't find a manufacturer to provide you with said needed component. If you find the load or you are planning on handloading...I'd put an added intrest in the 835!!! The bore feature is something you should consider an awesome feature. Mossbergs intensions are right on the money by doing this but, I'm not sure the major shot shell maufacturers were ready for this. for what it's worth...just a couple a cents ehh? sounds like a good time fezman. Doc must've loved those little morsels ehh?? I back up with 6's too - top bbl gets 7's though. I'd normally use 8's but, a few years ago I ran into a liquidation sale where the store had Federal Duck and Pheasant #7 steel loads for dirt cheap so I picked up a few cases of both 20 and 12. I'll be shootin' 7's til the well runs dry.
  23. one other thing - Have you tried cycling light loads through your gun yet?. My brothers was able to cycle 7/8oz winchester super speeds and mine wasn't. You never know until you try it i guess. for what it's worth ...
