    Snow/Rain

I'm thinking that when it is snowing or raining that that isn't the best time to hunt grouse. I think I'll try pheasant or ducks in that type of weather. Uli and I traipsed through the mountains this morning in the snow and sleet, and all we did was get wet and lose our footing a lot on the wet and muddy hillsides. He had a blast running around, looking for birds, but we came home empty handed. [ 10-29-2005, 04:49 PM: Message edited by: sdkidaho ]
  2. Just as soon as I knock down my first waterfowl ever, I'll toss a pic up here. Tucker, best wishes, man. I hope all goes well. We'll keep a light on for you. Darby
  3. The recent hurricanes were not something to joke about, nor make light of, but, if you prepare yourself and make priorities, you too can get through one of these harrowing experiences: Hurricane Survival Kit Toilet Paper........................................check Bud Light...........................................check Keystone Ice........................................check Budweiser...........................................check Red Dog.............................................check Misc. other bottles of alcohol......................check Piece of plywood to float your old lady and booze on................check Next time let's all be more prepared!
  4. Very cool. Thanks man.
  5. Just North of I.F., so not very far from you. I'm a novice for certain - I've never shot a duck or goose before.
  6. Well, I went out on our opening day for Waterfowl. Screwed up my alarm so I didn't get out before first light, but went to an area that I still found ducks in. I could have taken three or four throughout the morning, but I had one major problem. No way to retrieve them. I hadn't went out and bought any waders yet, and I wasn't wanting to trust Uli to retrieve them just yet as that isn't his strong point at the moment. Had a good time being out in the woods for a few hours, but didn't get anything. Will have to go and give it another try.
  7. Here are a couple of pics from after training today. Planted three Chuckar for Uli (ooo-lee) and he did great. The trainer says he is ready to go!
  8. You have my complete sympathy. This is my fear - taking it apart to clean it and having it go *SPROING!!!" all over the freaking place. LOL Sorry. Not funny. Hope you get it back together.
  9. Maybe a vesent is a slower less intelligent cousin to the pheasant, only bred in Illynoise?

    Duck hunting

Illinois Fish and Game, Hunting section. Right-hand side, click Waterfowl / Migratory Game Oh, and their site sucks. I think they want you to download a pdf file to find the info rather than just freaking TELLING YOU. Duck opens here in my area this Saturday. I'll be going out to try and knock down my first duck ever.
  11. And here I thought I was doing good by knowing what a POS is. [ 10-05-2005, 08:29 PM: Message edited by: sdkidaho ]
  12. So POA is where I believe I have my gun aimed, and POI is where the shot actually lands. Yes? And hopefully the two coincide.
  13. Another question after reading some Huglu forums: POA - Point of Acquisition? POI - Point of Impact? Do I have that right?
  14. Thanks for the input, and for the link. Very informative. These guys are close enough for me to travel too without much trouble so I may give them a look. AFTER I get my autoloader of course
  15. OTFB = Off Topic From Benelli Sorry, didn't know where else to ask this on these forums. I found a place in my home state that does some custom O/U shotguns. It seems they are an off-shoot of Huglu Shotguns. Anyone know anything about Huglu, and their quality or lack there of? The place I'm talking about is DeHaan Shotguns, and they look pretty nice, and not badly priced. Thanks for the input.
  16. I was coming down from one of our remote locations (for work) and noticed this bull moose off to the side of the road. I grew up in Wyoming so I've seen some big animals, deer, elk, moose, etc... but this is probably one of the biggest moose I've seen in this area. Almost made me want to hunt big game again... almost. Sorry for the poor quality photo - he was trying to bug out and I so I was trying to hurry and get a shot of him. "OF" not "AT"
  17. One of the best pieces of information I received for getting your pup used to gun fire (I assume that's what you refer to when you say "the action of my guns") was loud noises at feeding time. I have metal feeding dishes, one for water, one for food. When meal time came I would bang away at those and make a rucus and be sure to play with the pup while he was there so that it became a game. I also tried to have him around whenever I was making a lot of noise, hammering, things like that. Introduced him to the gun about a month and a half ago. He never batted an eye. Lots of noise, and fun. Then be sure to follow the instruction for introducing them to actual gun fire. Best of luck.
  18. Check out this forum as they have a lot of guys that train dogs and discuss stuff.
  19. I'll get one heading your way, Tuck, but I'll open it up and check all the seems first, just to make sure it's secure. I wouldn't feel right about sending you sub-standard equipment.

    Training

Another good day of training. Uli went out with the trainer on Monday and Friday, and I went with him this morning. The trainer basically says that he trusts the dog and that now we just need to make sure that I'm handling him correctly so that I don't screw up any training that has been put in place. Partridge and Sage Grouse opened today. Lots of hunting to be done.
  23. Dude, are you sure? Because I think it may not be the weather.
  24. Read this article as it addresses barrel length some what. Also, if you look at the top right of your screen you will see a "search" feature. If you search on "barrel length" you'll find all the other threads where this was discussed. To give you a head start, I got the feeling from the articles and the discussions that a 28" was the one that seemed most preferred for an all-around length. Upland, waterfowl, turkey, etc...
