    Turkey Loads

Went to buy a few more boxes of Winchester Extended Range 3-1/2" #6's ... came back with Remington Hevi-Shot because the Winchester stuff went from $26.99 a box to $40.00 a box. I asked the guy if Winchester is $18.00 a box better than Remington! LOL That's 4 bucks every time you light one off!
  2. Well ... I'll tell you; I just returned from buying some Remington Hevi-shot 12ga, 3-1/2" turkey loads for 23 bucks a box. I went out to buy a few boxes of Winchester X-tended range stuff BUT ... they raised their price from $26.00 a box to $40.00 YES ... FORTY DOLLARS!!! a box. They SHOULD go out of business for that sort of price gouging! Butch

    SBE II recoil

Shot hundreds of slugs through mine and about two boxes of steel down in Texas last week on ducks ... perfect operation. (of the gun anyway) LOL
  4. Not to sound simplistic, but did everything function after it was dropped and before it was disassembled? Could there have been more damage than to just the Surecycle?
  5. I thought "they" pulled threads like this??? I wonder if they make fully rifled Briley tube sets for O/U's???
  6. Nice daughter Jim ... her mother more than compensated for your genetics. Being so bright and attractive; I think you should buy her a nice Benelli for making you look good. Butch
  7. Maybe it's just me ... but I get conflicting "base" reactions to camo bikinis. LOL
  8. Listen ... what you people are all failing to take into account is "WE'RE DEALING WITH ITALIANS HERE!!!! Do NOT apply conventional American logic to the equation. I've been unwillingly involved with my son's ten year "relationship" with Ferrari ... and it's EXACTLY like the Benelli stories. A lot of attention to form and function ... world class as a mater of fact ... and almost none to that whole Harvard business crap. They're like mad artists who don't worry about eating ... just creating. LOL

    Quality ammo

Good Morning and Happy New Year. I have had zero problems with thousands of Winchester shells, nor any with Remington ... both fine outfits. I often seek out and use Federal ammo too. Federal is an excellent company with a patriotic vein to it; which I support wholeheartedly. (Ra, Ra) LOL I can understand your ire with the results you received when using Federal, BUT ... without sounding adversarial ... the firearm should be able to digest ANY factory ammunition; so I'm guessing there's a little something amiss with the gun, rather than the ammunition. (Unless you were trying those ancient cardboard shells your grandpa willed to you) I know pumps are pretty straightforward & bullet proof; but personally, I'd be afraid that the firearm would suddenly start rejecting yet another brand, so I'd either send it in to Benelli or get it a checkup at a competent gunsmith. I don't remember seeing any other Nova/Federal complaints???
  10. That's what life's all about ... ain't it grand!
  11. PM Mudhen ... he's got the turkey hunting deal down pat. The .655 seems to be in the ballpark, although the .660 Rhino Turkey choke got the best press that I've seen. 3-1/2" Winchester "Extended Range" Hi-Density #6's got rave reviews too. With all respect to the authors; here's some posts I saved when I was going through the same research; you'll have to dig out the pertinent information from a bunch of assorted posts ... but there's good stuff embedded in there. Butch Hevi does leave a mess, but as far as reliability.. I have had no problems. It has killed most everything I have thrown it at, usually quite effectively. Most of the problems were with the original manufacturer, not Remington. I think the small price of a few extra passes of the bore cleaner is worth the efficiency of the kill. That stuff really hits hard! Less follow up shots required = less ammo wasted. (IMHO) As for chokes - follow Tucker's link + Check the NWTF message board for Benelli turkey chokes. Most seem to like the Rhino's or other brands in the .660 to .675 range. Briley makes some quality chokes for pass shooting, I've only used factory stuff. You should be able to shoot heavi-shot through any choke that is rated for it - including most turkey chokes. Check the manufacturer's web site or call. I killed 2 turkey's this spring with the same load you posted above thru a Briley XF extended choke. Not the greatest patterns past 35 yards, but it smoked 'em in close. Good luck and enjoy the new gun! 1. for turkeys i would use a kicks .660 or .655 1. I used a Cabel's HS choke .670 w/ 31/2 #5s in my nova on a nice tom at 30 yds recently. He didn't know what hit. I intend to pattern some of the premier chokes, but so far I was content w/ what I got from a $29.00 except that it rusted in the threads from rain. I am very pleased with the hevi shot, not messy and worked more than fine. This past season I was duck hunting w/ guys that were using HS and I didn't know it at the time, nor did they tell, but I can say they had some reach out and touch. for duck I rather wait for the shot than pay the price. 1. I shot my 3" 12 guage today. Here are the results...With #4 shot I totally blew the head apart at 20 yards, Put 36 hits in the head & neck at 30 yards but only 3 hits in the head & neck at 40 yards. Why such a sudden drop? I then switched to # 6 shot. Similar results but with 8-12 in the head and neck at 40 yards. Any Advice? 1. however if you must shoot past 30 yds use an extra full extended choke with winchester xtended range turkey shot(it's incredibly expensive but devestatingly good patterns) 1. After some advice and some reading up, I guess I was over choking the # 4s. I am using the Comp-n-choke xxx full. I switched to winchester supreme turkey loads..2oz # 5s. The results with the 5s were 34-36 good hits at 30 yards...17-22 good hits consistantly at 44 yards. Tucker, I've killed a lot of turkeys and very few over 30 yards. I was just kind of confused as to why my gun was performing that way... more than being concerned that I might not be able to take a long range shot at a bird. I guess I have my answer. Thanks All. 1. You could try a splatter board and find out where your pellets are going at 40 yards. 1. SBE II + Rhino .660 1.5" choke + Win Ext #6's + a tom at 49 yards (not my range but that was what I was offered) 1. 10-4 I just personally believe that trying a tom over 30 yards is risky at best. I know people do it all the time, but I'd rather let him get away clean than to cripple him and lose him. I've killed maybe 30 Spring gobblers in my time and I had my second miss (I'm sure a few hit him) last year at 40 yards. It won't happen again. disclaimer: The above comments are my own personal beliefs based upon my own experiences. If you can kill gobblers at 150 yards with #9 shot, then go for it. 1. You are absolutely right Tucker. I'll bet that the majority of game that got away wounded (deer, turkey or whatever) were the result of taking an ill-advised shot. Mudhen, I tried the win. ext. # 6 today. That really is an impressive load. I couldn't believe the pattern that I was getting...consistantly over 20 good head/neck hits at 40 yards. (Shooting 3" .) It was pretty expensive though. 1. Yes, it is rather pricey, pricey but good! If I shot it during duck season, I would end up spending $1500! I have heard that the Win Extended is non-tox and will be available for waterfowling once given the final USFW approval. mudhen - CA 1. i get really good patterns out of a kicks choke with federal 3-1/2 tungsten plated shells 1. I have always questioned non-lead shot in full chokes. but does that leave a nasty mess in your barrel after you test fired those? and If you don't mind what exactly were your results from that testing? 1. no it is lead shot but it is just plated with tungsten it worked great. got 45 in head and neck at 40 yards. 1. =================================================================== According to Rhino - Wing Supply does not stock a 2" Rhino for the SBE II - they stock a 1.5" Rhino for the SBE II. No one stocks a 2" Rhino for the SBE II, it is a special order from Rhino and costs $120. The 1.5" Rhino I have is rusty brown/red colored. Rhino 'splained it all to me - they tested the 2" Crio and found no benefit over the 1.5" Crio, so the 1.5" Crio is the standard model. A very sharp lady @ Rhino told me to buy the 1.5" and test it - she said she would be surprised if I didn't like the pattern. The Rhino seems to like the Win Ext - and I hear it likes the Nitro HS H51013, which I have but have not tested yet. 1. Nice birds, mudhen! Only thing I've done so far is a jake that was nearly beheaded by the SBEII/Rhino combo at 12 paces. Normally, I don't shoot jakes, but this one was in a spot destined to be a shopping center by next season, so I figured I was doing no real harm.... and he was 12 paces in front of me. Ditto on others comments on the Rhino. Love it! 1. Gun-Guy the basic fact about turkey hunting is that you usually want the tightest pattern possible, So obvously you can use the factory full* choke that came with the gun. If you prefer the more precise and effective shots you can get a benelli or beretta extended extra full choke, they give you the precise increments on these to tell you the diameter of the end of the choke (i.e. .685) the lower the number the tighter the patern. Please note that you should use either #5 or #6 shot for an extra full choke. Personally I feel comfortable using winchesters classic regular lead loads, but hev-shot is ok. I would recomend Trulock* brand chokes if you aren't going to get beretta or benelli. 1. The patterns are good, and effective at up to 50 yds. I got about 75% density at that range using regualr winchester lead turkey loads in a 24" barrel on a beretta Al392 Urika. For #6 I don't use this load very often because, well I don't know I like #5 better. But I still have patterned it. using the same choke as the #5 above I got about the same patterns. So I tried a Rhino choke .665 diameter, and the patterns are beautiful. about 85% of the shot in the circle at 50 yds. and so I increased the range of the target and I have determined that it probably would be effective at 60yds. however I cannot confirm this becase I have never actually shot a turkey with #6. Every time I try a different shot size each season I don't even see anything. This season I waited till the last minute and I used #6 with the rhino, and of course I didn't get to use either of my tags. FLHAWGHUNTR This one fell to my Franchi with a .660 Rhino with Nitros H-378 tri hevi shot load at 35 yards. 1. Bowjack, give HEVI-13 a try by Environ-Metal .I used the factory mod choke and smoked a turkey at 65 yards with #6`s.I also use Briley choke tubes( Ex- Im Mod,and Lt.Mod) with excellent patterns with HEVI-13,Remington HV,Kent Tungsten Matrix. My choice for Turkey is HEVI-13 #6 or #4s and for waterfowl go with Kent Tungsten Matrix # 5s,#3s and 1s on Geese.Of all the shells that I have tryed these patterned the best at 40 and beyound and do a excellent job with the MOD Chokes.I`m shooting a Benelli SBE 11 (28") and had nothing but good results with this gun and these shells.Good hunting and hunt safe,Boo
  12. 26" SBEII ... forget the steady grip. I assume the Mossberg slug gun is covering the deer & hogs. The 10ga waterfowl & turkey. That leaves "Upland Game" ... SBEII 26", light, fast, reliable. (Also versatile, can do waterfowl & turkey using up to 3-1/2" shells ... probably better than whatever you're using now)
  13. A rifled choke and Federal Truball slugs. In leu of the rifled choke, any choke from modified and below will do. Only "Foster" type slugs should be used through a smoothbore barrel. Good for about 75 yards with accuracy. [ 01-04-2006, 05:02 PM: Message edited by: Butch-M ]
  14. The "13" year old started it! LOL
  15. I don't blame you a bit if you're recoil conscious. Personally, if the Xtrema is softer shooting and you accept the differences between it and the SBEII ... I'd buy it in a heartbeat. There's nothing positive about excessive recoil ... period. As far as the kid in the blind, the quickest way to turn off somebody to the shooting sports, and the fastest way to develop bad shooting technique ... is to pound the bejeezzus out of "the new guy." Particularly women & children. Come to think of it, my first shotgun was a single shot 12ga wonder passed around the neighborhood we called "The Stovepipe." Kicked like a croquet mallet, & fell apart in your hands half the time after you lit it off. You didn't know who got the worst of the deal, the duck in front ... or the kid in back of the thing. I understand that not everyone can afford a soft shooting 20ga semi-auto for their first gun though. The kid's a Spartan and I'd be proud of him; but he's exceptional in this day and age.
  16. One for each hand and one slung low on your back to swing in after the first two are empty and dropped ... so you might only sell just one. LOL I kinda like the first ... or maybe the forth ... so chose one of those two to let go. I have almost the same Beretta by the way. SUPER shooter. MERRY CHRISTMAS! 17. Well, the Beretta you can actually use anyway. All super looking guns, but what do you do for a living that you need 4 self defense weapons?
  18. DJ ... go to the word "SEARCH" above & click on it. Type in "TERROR CHOKES" when you get to the window and you'll probably find just what you're looking for. There have been quite a few choke threads over the last year.
  19. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL ... and a special thanks to everyone who gave me their advice over the last year. Butch
  20. Great story ... and I see you covered all the bases, crossed the "T's" and dotted the "I's." Good idea to get the coppers involved. LOL (I belong to the local county Police Chief's Association)
  21. First ... the slug barrels cleans up slick as a whistle ... just don't shoot anything other than sabots through it. If you are not using sabot slugs through a rifled barrel or choke; it is my understanding that the rifling grooves fill up with lead after only a few shots. The rifling doesn't spin the soft lead slug as much as the lead just plows straight on out the barrel being scraped off as it passes over the lands. All of which happens under great temperature and pressure. Supposedly it's a pain to clean out after you've fouled the barrel. So, there is no damage; just world class fouling. I've shot most of the sabots out of my SBEII, including the new Hornady SST and repeatedly found the Winchester Platinum Tips to group the best so far "IN MY GUN." I got 4" groups as I was re-sighting in my scope at 110 yards a few weeks ago; and that will shrink to 2"-3" when I get serious. The Winchester Partition Golds grouped very good if you want more penetration and more range, but I didn't have enough shells or enough shoulder left to really test them. As far as performance goes ... the Win. Plat. Tips dropped 15 deer with 15 shots for me in 2004. Individual shotguns are extremely ammo sensitive, so you have to test them all yourself. A lot of guys have great success with Federals with the Barnes copper bullet. I like the looks of the new Remington Ultra Coreloks too. Someday I'll test the Remingtons. Bottom line is you have to try different ammunition in your gun. One thing you’ll learn if you do is ... different brands and loads behave radically different. There can be as much as a 4" difference in group size at 50 yards. I had some heavy and slow slugs that grouped decent at 50 yards, disappear off the target at 100 yards! So when you find a slug you like, buy some extras ... you don’t want to run out in the field because not much is going to behave like what you had. Be sure to take a "fouling shot" before you go out in the field for your elk hunt in order to clear any solvent or oil left in the barrel from your last cleaning. Your point of impact can move 2"-4" high at 50 yards if you don't. Here's a few more sources of information for you: Go to www.tarhunt.com for a lot of good slug shooting information. Click on the "shooting guide" tab and read through by clicking on the headings listed down the left margin. Click on the word "SEARCH" right above (by New Topic, Post a Poll, Post a Reply) and type in "SLUG." About ten pages of information will come up. Read through. LOL GOOD LUCK on your hunt! Butch
  22. Amazing Russ! "Finder's Keepers" aside ... and not to rain on your parade ... but I wonder what the legalize is here though. Will there be any problems with serial numbers and government registrations, etc, etc? Is the gun "registered" to the original owner? While the oppressive and sometimes ridiculous laws change almost daily here in Jersey, we've been so regulated that you technically needed a written "transfer" slip for your buddy to hand you his firearm just to let you try out his gun on the target range! (at least at one time) It's nearly impossible to keep up with the changes in the laws, so I have NO IDEA how things work out west ... but I'd check into the situation so you're not trying to fly out hunting somewhere, or get stopped by a futuristic game warden and wind up in handcuffs because the serial number doesn't show up in his hand held Dell super computer which tapped into the Orwellian central database. LOL The guy must have been a real classic Bozo. Walking on the ice WITH his gun (guaranteed to take you right to the bottom)... safety off! And then LEAVES it there after he goes through??? No way on earth I leave that gun there! I bet you never realized how dangerous that retrieve was (I would have never thought about it) ... waterproof shells, no safety, you could have blown yourself in two if the trigger snagged something. You're a lucky guy Russ.
