One of the places I dove hunt requires steel shot. It was like pulling teeth to find ammo for those hunts

Put a box of 1 oz. steel 7's through my black eagle II and it never failed to cycle. Probably won't ever shoot that light, but nice to know I could without any problems.

Hard to beat a youth 870 20 ga. We sell them for $250 but you can find them cheaper. They have tubes and are reliable and tough.

No crap on the Ithaca. I have a M 87 featherweight pump and the recoil is to put it lightly, excessive. I decided to go for the Benelli after years of hunting with an 870 super mag. Love the gun, but it was just time for an upgrade. I'm not apposed however to busting out the ol 870 a few times. That gun has been through **** and back.

Mine cycles 3 dram 1 1/8 all day long. I shot two boxes of 1 1/4 pheasant loads first, then have shot nothing but lighter stuff since. I haven't put 1 ounce loads through it yet but i am confident it will cycle those too. The gun is built to hunt, so i'm really not concerned with anything lighter than 1 1/8

Yeah go with the synthetic. If you duck hunt like I do, you'll be thankful for the more durable stock. I'm in college and don't have any money either, but I justified my purchase by calling it a long term investment. I felt bad at first for spending so much but now am glad I did.
