Choose your HD weapon...BUT, out of only 3 choices...
Duggan replied to shotgunNoob's topic in Benelli
I need to get a dog. The problem is, I don't really like dogs. But I need one to supplement my home defense plan ... as astute as I am, dogs hear and know stuff instinctually that I never will, so one must be obtained. I really don't like needy creatures bugging me though ... what to do what to do. -

Preban 226 mags exist, but are much less common and as such much more expensive than glock mags ... and from all accounts I hear, new sigs are to be avoided. If you like yours and it works, great, but I passed on buying one for now. My next gun is a S&W .357 scandium/titanium J Frame to keep in my pocket loaded with Gold Dot short barrel rounds. -

There are no preban XD-M mags in existence, thus if I was to have an XD-M I would be stuck with 10 round mags, thus defeating the entire purpose. We are "stuck" with glock 19/17 in NYS if we want preban mags. -

I'm a 9mm guy, so your argument is moot. 18 x .355 = 6.39" I can put .39" more projectile on target than you I can shoot more and reload less in a single session, but it's not worth it because 9mm is $9/box Mine has WAY less recoil and muzzle flip than the snappy 40 S&W, so I can dump my entire mag without being off target All fun aside, I personally just don't like the .40 ... I don't like the snappy recoil pattern, the fact that cops use it, or the fact that the glock 22/23 suck terribly, which is what I would basically be forced to use in NY if I was to adopt the .40. I'd rather stick with 9mm and 45, but to each their own. I also actually much prefer the "push" of the .45 acp to the "snap" of the .40. I've shot plenty of both. -
So, the gunstore didn't tell you it was the new Brady approved, self unloading model that you bought? This awesome new development in firearms technology is meant to protect you FROM yourself, and to save all the innocent lives that would inevitably be lost if you decided to take your "well being" into your own inferior, incapable, untrained criminal hands. Guns are used for killing only, and killing is bad, so you should thank Benelli and Brady for giving you a true "less than lethal" model. What I would suggest you do, to be really safe (since lets be honest, the criminal is probably just going to take your gun and use it on you anyways), is to store your gun disassembled, locked in individual containers in separate locked safes. That way, there is very little chance that you will ever be able to hurt yourself or anyone else by wielding a dangerous firearm against a poor person who probably just accidentally stumbled into your house to ask for a cup of sugar for his aging grandmother. Another option would be to simply sell the gun if you are too foolish to realize all the awesome benefits of the Benelli Brady self unloading model. Less guns on the street = proven decrease in crime, because without guns how can you have shootings? It's simple math. With the ~$500 you could get for the gun, you could buy yourself a pallet of Obama campaign posters, which you could plaster all over your house. When the poor, innocent "intruder" breaks in, he probably will probably stop dead in his tracks and fall to his knees, in order to praise the true Lord and Savior Of The Universe that he sees all over your walls. You could also use all those posters of Glorious Leader as padding ... if you make a big roll of them and then hide inside the roll, you are likely to be very cushioned from any and all blows by The Ones image itself. Government paper is actually very high quality and will absorb a lot of shock, so if you stay perfectly still and let people take whatever they want from your house, they will likely tire of kicking your Savior padded body ... that is, if they even had the gall to attack His Image in the first place. This is really your best line of defense, in my expert opinion. If all else fails, you should abandon your home and give it to those in TRUE need, aka the good people who have been forced into a life of petty crime by Americas racist, intolerant and inequitable middle class, such as yourself. That guy deserves your house more than you do, heck, YOU basically built that house with the blood and sweat of the poor people you trampled along the way. All the "intruders" are doing is claiming their birthright, because without them to leech off of, you never could have afforded that house or your Benelli Brady in the first place. I suggest you take your place in the unemployment line with the rest of us and be happy that there are people so empathetic in the government ... I mean, you are now eligible for unemployment, food stamps, free healthcare, workmans comp, disability, debt consolidation and elimination, government subsidized living, free food at soup kitchens, bi monthly welfare checks, child support if you can get a sympathetic judge to rule in your favor, no more mortgage payment, standard of living raises ... it's the life I tell you. No need to thank me for my consulting services, I'm just here for the free food and warm vent to sleep next to at night.

You would be a 40 guy. -
As in, one of these: I know a lot of you jokers have upgraded to collapsible stocks, and probably have your old stock sitting around collecting dust ... so how about it? $100 offered. I need an extra stock for a chop job. Please form an orderly and single file line, applicants will be processed based on a first come, duggans choice served basis, etc ...

ETA - I am an idiot and post things in the wrong place.

That leaves you askign $100 more than before, and nobody bought it before ... just saying ...

As part of the "cocked and locked" crowd, I would always choose a rifle if given a chance. When all options are compared, rifles ALWAYS come out on top. They are simply better, and more effective. The problem is the user, not the rifle. That said, my first line of defense is a glock 19 and a surefire E2D-LED, glock loaded 15+1 with DPX hp rounds. It sits on my windowsill at all times, if my door comes crashing down I am grabbing it and dumping rounds ... If I have time, and feel I need it, my m4 is right inside my closet, leaning up against the corner, loaded with LE127 buck. If I really feel like the zombies are coming, I will strap on the chest rig/plate carrier with 2 lvl 4 rifle plates, 8 30 round mags in pouches, and grab the LMT MRP. Mags are loaded with TAP 5.56 75 grain rounds. But out of all those, the pistol is the fastest, solely because I don't leave my loaded shotgun lying next to my bed. If I had time to get it, I would use it ... but currently I don't even have a light on it, so I'd probably stick to my glock 19 and surefire. Also, I would put on my warpaint and tie a bloody rag around my head, and then run out of my room bump firing while screaming obscenities and taking the lords name in vain. -
Funny, I have done both of those and I'm still reasonably grounded in reality, or at least I'd like to hope.

It's the age we live in sadly ... personally, I blame the hippies for the downfall of American society.

I am sorry, but that's just wrong. They are saying that to limit their liability and cost, nothing more nothing less. If they say "sure you can use any choke" and you are one of the rare cases where something bad happens, it is on them to replace the gun, replace your arm, etc. They don't want to be sued, so they pick and recommend the safest, lowest common denominator. By their logic, a MOD choke would also be "too tight", and that is just laughable. If you are worried about it, sure, go the safe route ... but the whole "slugs cant go through full chokes" is a huge myth that has been busted 1000 times by real world shooting.

In all seriousness, CLP coated on the outside of the gun does a pretty good job of making the exterior surface more even when it dries and leaves a protective film all over the finish ... I have preban mags that has had their color completed changed from CLP, from being all worn down to bare aluminum and blotchy to being smooth gray colored, all from being soaked in multiple coats of CLP. The CLP coat is actually pretty durable too ... will this work for camo? Dunno. I do it for rust prevention, because I don't really care about the finish, but I care about rust.
-
Is that loaded ammunition that was sent USPS?
-
Doesn't duracote require baking? Either way, it would probably work to some degree ... assuming it doesn't make the gun tacky/sticky/glossy etc. You're going to be fighting an uphill battle trying to keep the finish in mint condition though ... it's a very common complaint.
-
Well, it's win-win. If ammo gets banned, I have plenty to shoot. If I need it for SHTF, I have it to shoot in a pinch. If I need money, I can resell it for profit. I see no reason not to invest in ammo ... well, at least back when it was available for a reasonable price. The most I ever paid for 1k brass 5.56 was $240/k, now it is consistently around $500/k for M193. Perhaps someday the price of ammo will come down, and I won't feel bad about dipping into my stash.
-
I have "only" about 500 buckshot and 250 rifled slugs, and a few hundred birdshot rounds. I feel this is adequate for my own uses ... as a non hunter, my only real use for an m4 would be for second line home defense, fun, competition or zombies. I have over 20,000 5.56x45 and 7.62x39 rounds ... because whenever given an option, I'd take a rifle any day of the week over a shotgun. I also feel that assault rifles and their ammo are much more likely to take a hit, WAY before smoothbore shotguns, and as such I have focused most of my ammo money on rifle rounds. Pistol rounds hover around 6,000 depending on what I shoot
-
Benelli camo guns are notoriously bad at maintaining their finish. Touch up paint and try not to drop it I guess ... it's going to happen either way, and I personally would not baby an expensive weapon ... but if you care about making the finish last, it's going to take some careful deployment.
-
It uses its own recoil tube from what I can tell, so that's a clear no go ...
-
I agree with 99% of what you said and also use FE127 as my preferred buckshot, but shooting a rifled slug through a full choke will NOT destroy, or even have any affect on the barrel. I have shot hundreds of slugs through my barrel with a full choke with no effect ... the threads are fine, the chokes are fine, everything is fine. Modern chokes are WAY tougher than a piece of lead. The only bad thing that happens when shooting slugs through a full choke is that the slug gets deformed slightly, which can degrade accuracy.

Wait, you sold a factory extension for $150? Was it NIB or used?
-
Innnnnteresting! I forgot that the Sidearmor system uses the factory handguards ... see, if I buy a rail I will specifically want to use a small VFG. The rail looks good though, not nearly as big as perhaps I thought ... if only it was made to proper specs, I would probably buy it. I still disagree with your light setup choices, but to each their own ... it looks like you get your intended effect and the end result looks clean and well done. I still contend that a push button, support side mounted light is the best of all worlds, and much simpler ... I am curious about your plan on employing the light though ... are you going to strobe with it, or have it on every time you grip the gun, or on command for 15 seconds or so at a time as you clear rooms, or what ... It seems to me that such a pressure switch, located on the fire control grip, would be easy to accidently hit with some grips, or if it was hard enough to activate that this was not an option, that it would sometimes fail to activate when you wanted it to with less than optimal grips ... I'm sure you will test all this though ... I hope it works out for you. Also, if you haven't read a guide such as this one, I suggest looking at it ... I personally found it very helpful, as it just concerning the practical use of a weapon light ... http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=20&t=446092 ETA - I forget, are you running an optic in a larue mount on the rail? If so, I am very interested to hear if the mount gets destroyed or not ...
-
I understand. I really do.
