I think it's a southern La., hen, mallagator. They fly low, are extremely hard to bring down, and decoy well to dead chickens. They are better skinned than plucked, and taste like chicken..Mike :D

duckht183, Nice! Don't get many opportunities for 'luets in California. First glance I thought it was a Cackler but I think I do see some white at the base of the black neck. I've only seen one in my lifetime. Grasslands or Sac Valley?

I killed that one on the San Joaquin River just North of Airport Way in Manteca, that part of the river is full of them because they are working their way to and from the San Joaquin Refuge (which for whatever reason has never been opened so it's basically a giant close zone for the birds).

This was my first time hunting that part of the river this year, I pulled 3 Aleutian's outta this spot along with some Honker's so im already pretty pumped for next year.

Mudhen,

How do you like the BigFoot Spec decoys? Took a couple cases to my buds in Arkansas last year, they laughed at first. This year they had me bring three more cases from Rogers.

I laffed when I first saw them too. I don't laff anymore. Picking up 4 or 8 more tomorrow from SW :) My best speck year since 1998...

They look like they were designed by Matt Groening :)

There's a lot of things to not like about California, but I swear... duck hunting ain't one of them!

The vineyard turkeys are kinda nice too!

Awesome season, mudhen!

Nice!

I have to say Cali has the one thing I love, Waterfowl!

Im definately bumping it on my "travel to" hunting destinations.

1. Argentina

2. Kansas

3. California

4. Canada, maybe.

I think you`re right about that, believe they started in Oregon.

All I know is they work!

From a distance they look just like the real geese do.

The shells stay at home now, I`d rather sit on 8 Bigfoots than 3 dozen shells.

The Retracta Bases on my other brand full body decoys broke this year

I have 4 feeders (Canada Goose) should be here tomorrow.

I`m set for next season ;)

Nothin but Bigfoots for me from now on!

Nice birds

way to end it!

Thanks again for all the pics I love duck porn

Good lookin dog too!!!!!

dukaddictI remember making a trip up to Tuke Lake and going over to Neuman & Bennet with my partner so he could p/u 6 custom painted Big Foot speck decoys back in the late 80's and also getting a dozen canvasback 2nds for San Pablo Bay. They made the bomb can decoys.

Mudhen is that Yellow you have there a male?

Yes, but it's my blind partner's dog.

The last day was rainy & windy, but there were just enough birds left to have a nice closer....

almost forgot. Worcestershire and a seasoning that local chicken shack sells called "serindipity". The chicken shacks here had to remove MSG from there chicken and this is the seasoning that they now sell on the side that is like 90%

MSG, so its good on wild game.

Haha..yeah, probably does, but how good does total hair loss or cancer taste? Haha

Im ordering a 6 pack of Final Approach full body Honkers for next season... I cant wait!

I seriously considered them and the Hardcore dekes

but no more wire bases for this kid

not even at 6 for the price of 4 Bigfoots

The first place I ever saw full body dekes work their magic was at Lower Klamath.

Great pics

I miss it already....sigh

So whats the deal with you not using the wire bases anymore? Just curious, because I would think that Big Foot's would blow over fairly easy. I was reading the reviews between the full body Final Approach vs GHG Honker's and the majority of people were saying that the Final Approach weren't worth a damn...

The Big Foot floaters though are definately on my list .

I remember several reviews on the Final Approach -floaters- leaking. I went with the GHG floaters but may add 4 Big Foots too.

As for the wire bases...

You could say I`m hard on stuff.

If it can be bent, I will bend it.

If it can be broken, I will break it.

I try to be carefull I really do.....

Bent two wire bases last year when a bag fell out of my cart, was able to straighten them out. Broke several this year closing the tailgate on my truck. The little pins keep coming out and finally the plastic part on the decoy itself broke for good.

They`re still usable, they just stand lower, they won`t stay raised up any more ever again.

I did break a foot mount on the bigfoot but glued it back in that night. Good to go.

Only had two days they blew over, was able to mash them down into the mud (carefully :D) one day and find some T-posts to lay across the feet on another day.

Was thinking about drilling a hole in the base and putting tent stakes in the bags........

It just seems since I added full body`s and layouts my truck gets smaller and smaller and sometimes I don`t get the configuration just right at the end of the day and end up mashing the tailgate closed with brute force.

Got tired of pulling them out of the bag and find out they got bent....again.

Not the decoys fault.

So this morning I was helping my buddy train his new pup when these two birds came over the top of me...

IMG_2011.jpg?t=1297463937

The dairy that sits next to my field is full of pigeons but out of the 150+ birds that I have killed over there, this was my first double banded one.

This was a bird from the American Racing Pigeon Union and it belonged to a guy from Vacaville, CA (that was the info that I got from looking up the band number)

I guess they need to teach those birds to fly a little faster :D
