No. I have one SBE with maybe 25,000 rounds of steel shot through it. It has broken two hockey stick ejector plates since 1991, but no broken firing pins.

Excellent reply. Sounds like a solid goal each year Your comment on the does shows that you understand modern deer herd management

They have ignorant poachers too

Not for me usually I must kill or have the chance to kill. No joke. Now, how much to kill of what is dealt with on a case by case basis. Also, each game species has different objectives for me. Deer, waterfowl, turkeys, etc. all have different goals for me. I couldn't disagree more with the tired old "a bad day hunting" bit. A bad day hunting is just that. A good day a work can lead to so much more. For me, a good day at work can lead to sales, which leads to commission, which is how I pay for many fantastic hunts. The sun will rise everyday until I'm worm food. I don't need to be in the duck blind, with friends or family, with a wet dog, sipping a hot cup of coffee, just enjoying the sounds and sights of the marsh, etc. I'm there to kill ducks. Period. I want to kill ducks, go home, and then go back another day to kill more ducks. Turkeys are a bit different. I've had some success with them. Generally, I like to get a big tom down early each season. This takes the monkey off my back. But, as the season progresses, the passion to hunt the big toms seems to get stronger and stronger. I love these birds But this is just my take.....

I've never liked plywood for shotgun penetration testing. I prefer phonebooks. I get very similar results from phonebook testing when comparing H-13 to XR's. I suspect it is related to H-13 being 1090 fps, and the XR's being 1225 fps, but not sure. Remington HS has not been made in around three years, but while it was available, it was a real hammer at 1250 fps or something like that. I could never get it to pattern well enough to use for turkeys, but a boat load of ducks died from it for me. I can't get the Wingmaster HD turkey loads to pattern any better than the original Remington HS. Of course, I don't pattern at 50 yards, so I wouldn't know about those that claim H-13 'blows' through plywood at 50 yards. Also, I'm looking for 150-200 hits in a 10" circle at 40 yards, so a few golden BB's (or golden 5's) at 50 yards that might kill a turkey are of no interest to me. While I do take an occasion 40-45 yard shot, my average is around 15-20 yards, so I really don't go all out to test much past 40 yards.

I have tried the IC in .655 & .665 in my SBE II with just so so results using the 3.5# & 3" H-13 6's. Best results so far have been from my .660 Jellyhead or my .660 Rhino, but even these results are about the same as the Win XR 6's.

24" bbl guns have been cheaper than 26" & 28" for some time now, especially Benellis in Timber and/or Realtree. I've had nothing but bad luck patterning 24" guns and will never buy one again. Fine for waterfowl, not acceptable for turkeys (for me) no matter how many loads and chokes I tried. Fine for close range work though.

Along the same lines, I have bought 6 x $12 calls that don't sound as good as 1 good $80 call I have several custom slates from Pacific Flyway calls that have been deadly on my midwest trips. I'm only adding one slate this year, the Cherry Bomb slate from Mark Allan Drury calls.

I've been cleaning the inside of the mag tubes for as long as I've owned guns. This area can be critical to the proper functioning of any gun that feeds from a tubular magazine. I use a 10 gauge bore brush + steel wool + metal polish to keep that tube clean and free of any hang-ups. Leaking buffer is my mag tube enemy #1 That insert cap is most likely held in place with Lock-tite, but I'd check with Benelli CS or a GS that works on Benellis.

$12.03 from my area to Benelli USA - UPS Ground - no unusual restrictions on shipping long guns. Hand guns?, different story...
-
Do you have to use Fed Ex? I have always used UPS Ground for long guns. I have been using the +25% Benelli springs from Wolff Gunsprings since about 1992.
-
It's probably the Alaska part. Isn't everything 'Air' to and from there? Maybe try UPS? I shipped a rifle UPS Ground to Weatherby last November for $8.00, so there is no unusual rate just for guns. I have sales reps that live in HI. I have to send them samples and we pay a pretty good clip to get the stuff there. I don't complain because they are selling my stuff and just happen to live in HI. I presume Benelli will at least pay the shipping back?

I strongly disagree with your comments and your logic. The plugs tap out, no problem. I do cut the film around the plug with an Xacto knife if the gun is camo so the film does not lift with the plug. What will happen to a metal threaded plug when it stays in contact with a metal threaded opening and gets wet I doubt rifles, where I do see the metal screws, are as prone to getting wet as an M2 receiver, slug barrel or standard barrel. I think plastic plugs, tapped into place firmly, that stay put and seal the hole until the shooter decides it's time to remove them, are fine with me. And since I have happily purchased several Benellis with these plastic plugs, the proof is in the pudding Tapioca if you please.....

Never been down for me. I checked the day you said it was, and it worked fine for me The jake is cool. I may stick with the DSD hen for now, but the jake certainly looks interesting

Maybe, maybe not But, I just cancelled a $300 H-13 order with MidSouth based on your comments here, and I let HS know this along with your name, and a link to this post, so I hope they can verify the situation for me so I can get some ammo ordered and hit the boards pretty quick here

I've been shooting gold hulled 3.5" since last year. I'll let Hevi-Shot know they are wrong
-
I e-mailed Hevi-Shot about the 'street word', and they said to tell you that the 'street' was incorrect They are happy winning still contests with the 1090 fps, and they have no plans to speed it up I have heard that more speed with H-13 only degrades the pattern, and that is why they stick with 1090. For me, this keeps some Win XR's in the vest due to the speed and the need for a bit more range at times. XR's out-penetrate H-13 at longer ranges in my tests, so I'll keep both around for now.....

Supernova patterns, turkey loads, and poi vs. poa
mudhen replied to perkis's topic in Turkey Hunting
Yes, in in theory going from B to C should lower your POI, but this is primarily a wingshooting practice because many do not use the beads when wingshooting. BUT, I have always been able to move my turkey pattens around a bit by changing shims. Add in a little bead work, and you should be able to dial in a very workable combination. I found, many years ago, that I loved the B shim in my SBE II with the 6-8" lift. I aim at the base of the neck and let the pattern just rip into the head. This way I can watch the bird longer than I can with a 'cover' gun. You are on your own, as you should be, in finding what shell/choke combo works best in your S-Nova. Given that bore ID's are all over the place on Benellis, I would absolutley want to pattern my own Benelli on my own -
My Browning Silver started peeling after just a few hunts. Looked like heck after just 1/2 a season. Browning CS told me to pound sand My SBE II is fine going into it's 4th season in the field. I've never had one problem with any camo Benelli. I guess you just never know

www.refugeforums.com is #1 for me, with no one even close after that

Yep, underbored Benellis can peter out at 35-40 yards, especially the last barrels cut before they replace the cutter. I've got one of those .719 SBE's that you have, and while I LOVE the gun and take it almost everywhere, it does not print dense patterns much past 38-40 yards. I have friends with .723 barrels that pattern much better. I have been told that back-boring a Benelli semi-auto can make the gun stop cycling. You can't build an inertia gun that works a certain way with certain measurements and then simply just offer a back-bored barrel. It's not that easy. Different story for pumps and stack barrels probably. I like the SX3, but I own a Browning Silver, Gold, and two BPS's, and I assure you, just being over-bored does not just magically make the guns pattern themselves. For me, I have not found a magic Invector Plus combination that is substantially better than my current SBE II. I'm sure I'll find it someday, but if I keep my shots under 40 yards, which is probably a good range anyway, I don't really need anything other than my SBE II and Jellyhead or Rhino .660. Good luck!
-
I still love H-13. I shoot it in 12 gauge 3.5" #6's, SBE II, Jellyhead .660, for the most part. It is my favorite early season load. Later on in the season and on road trips, I tend to go with the Win XR's in #6's and #5's. Higher velocity for a little more yardage. I've yet to kill a bird with my 10 gauge BPS and H-13 #5's, but this may be the year
-
Hey 3, How big is that circle? I'll see what I can do at the patterning board
-
Because he is marking the holes on the inside with some sort of special 'Mr. Theo' pen
-
I'm really liking Federal Black Cloud #3's - the Duckman box - with any IC choke (non-ported). I may even order a skeet choke for next season. I have not had ONE torn up bird so far, but I don't get too many very close up shots. I can get the Federal BC's for under $200 a case delivered from Able Ammo.
