    Ruger SR-556

I was checking out the SCAR at the local gunshop and I really couldn't get into it. Just looked up the LMT though and it deserves some attention, thanks for the heads up!
  2. I'm with Duggan on this one. There's a sweetspot in there somewhere. There's too many minimalists out there that really don't know how to be a minimalist, some do but most don't. They're chasing a trend and joining a group because being part of a group is "cool". They're just as bad as the overkillers with all the fancy stuff. For some reason they feel better having just what you need instead of having something better than you need. Good for them I guess. Having things you don't need is nice if you can afford it, assuming you already have the stuff you need. Somebody could just as easily make some cute videos of the minimalist bear starving to death because he ran out of ammo cause he only had a handful of rounds. Or because he couldn't stop an attacker with his .22. Maybe he froze to death because he was using a poncho for a sleeping bag and didn't have a tent in the freezing rain, but at least his backpack weighed half as much. The videos were funny though.

    Ruger SR-556

I'm not looking for something that I can shoot all day long and not have to clean until bedtime. I'm looking for something that I could potentially shoot day after day and crawl in the mud and get dirty and not even consider cleaning it and it'll keep shooting. Like the AK. Anybody out there that says an AR is as reliable as an AK is having some sort of AR wet dream. I'm not saying an AR isn't reliable, I'm just saying it isn't reliable enough for me. So why don't I want an AK? Even though I'm attracted to the AK reliability I'm also attracted to the ergonomics of the AR. I do know the piston system has been around a while as was mentioned but the SR556 hasn't. It's still a relatively new gun. I've been searching the net for some bad reviews of the Ruger and haven't been able to find any. As far as the AR shooting the right ammo and all that, I'm really liking the adjustability of the Ruger and that it can adapt to reliably shoot whatever I feed it. 5.56 vs. 7.62 is aples and oranges (why would they censor aples?). I like them both for different reasons but that's a whole other thread. I'm also a 1911 guy. I was considering a Wilson Combat or Ed Brown but not sure I'll be able to afford one by the time I'm done with the rifle project. Thanks for the helpful posts. I really think the Ruger is the best of both worlds when it comes to what I want in a rifle.

    Ruger SR-556

Not saying it's hard to clean, but from what I've heard numerous times it doesn't take much for them to get dirty enough to start having reliability issues. This could be from foreign material like dirt, sand or dust and not just a lot of shooting without cleaning. My number one concern for what I'm about to buy is reliability. I really love ARs and I really want one. I also love AKs but I don't think they feel as good or are as user friendly as an AR but of course the reliability is there with an AK. I'm hoping I found the middle ground with the Ruger SR556. The one thing I don't like about it so far is that it's a relatively new design and it doesn't have enough time under it's belt to prove itself as I would like.

That's nice! What kind of bi-pod is that? Nice looking gun!

    Ruger SR-556

I know it's not a Benelli but you guys are gun guys so I'm gonna ask here anyway. I've been researching rifles, I plan on making a purchase soon and I'm almost there. I don't want your typical AR-15 even though I really like them because of the high maintenance requirement that comes along with it. So for a while I was leaning towards an AK-47. Aggiephil got me looking at the Arsenal AKs and I almost went ahead on the SGL-21 but I decided to keep looking. That's when I came across the Ruger SR-556. It seems like it's what I want because I like AR-15s and it uses a piston system rather than just a gas system. The piston keeps the bolt area cleaner and makes for a more reliable weapon. Plus it's adjustable so I can keep the gun functioning in dirty conditions where the standard AR might fail. Does anybody have any thoughts on these Rugers? Any experience with them? I've pretty much narrowed it down to this gun. Also, since I'm new to rifles I'm wondering what's the best grain to use for different applications with the 5.56x45/.223 ammo.
  7. Stamp "922r Compliant" on the gun somewhere. Seriously, it'll probably work.
  8. Did you get it yet? It will be a disgrace if you spend that money on anything other than your guns.
  9. Great choice with the tube, you will love it. Step 1. Buy Hookster's forearm. He's a great guy. Step 2. Buy an American made follower. Step 3. Do not replace your stock with a collapsible stock. If you do, you'll be on the wrong side of 922r again because some idiot decided that stock is 2 parts instead of 1. I have kip's tube too and I love it. I don't have a us made follower because I have no problem with my oem follower. I have a collapsible stock and my forearm is oem. My M4 is not 922r compliant. The targets I shoot don't seem to mind at all.
  10. I like Federal 127 OO and 127 RS, these are Federal's standard OO buck and rifled slugs. When it comes to target shooting I like to shoot what runs good in my gun and what I keep for defense and zombie shooting. This is also the ammo I'm currently stockpiling. The Gander Mountain by my house doesn't have any, cause I bought them all . Why practice with anything other than my primary ammo.

    Hello

He should have used the post count thread like all the cool people.

    Hello

    Hello. post count +1. Yessss
  13. Mine kicks pretty good. Put some 3" magnum slugs in there and see how that tastes. It doesn't kick as much as a pump but it is a 12 gauge after all.

    Sidearmor rail

The full rail does protrude into the ghost ring a small amount but not enough to cause a problem. The iron sights can still be used.

    Sidearmor rail

No, I didn't really get rid of the lamp. But the other stuff is very serious. Sure I felt like a dumbass. I originally posted this because I was concerned that the rail was twisted and I wanted to know if anybody else had that issue. I wasn't bashing sidearmor like I was bashing the elastic shell holder. I was just hoping there was an easy fix or that it was me doing something wrong. And it was. I still love my sidearmor rail and 6 shot shell holder and I still think the elastic shell holders are lame.

    Sidearmor rail

With all the sidearmor stuff coming up lately I remembered about this thread. When I was looking through the sights the rail appeared crooked. This was because of where I was sitting and where the lamp was. It made shadows and created the illusion of a crooked rail. It never occurred to me to sit somewhere else or try different lighting. The next day I sat in the same spot (yes, it's my favorite spot) and looked through the sights again. All appeared normal. I was looking through it at different times throughout the day scratching my head. I didn't add 2+2 until that night when I was in my favorite spot with my favorite gun (again) and noticed the illusion again because the lamp was on. So I turned off the lamp and looked again and all was normal. I had to locate this thread and recant my statement about the sidearmor rail. I would have done so sooner but I forgot about this thread. The sidearmor rules and mine is perfect. I did however get rid of the lamp for creating illusions. I can't have that, it is unacceptable.
  17. Absolutely. I was knocking it and I never tried it. I don't like them. They're not what I'm looking for in a shellholder and I think they're lame. That's my opinion and I'm velcroing to it. If somebody wasn't asking for opinions then I probably would have kept it to myself but I can't promise that.
  18. Just my opinion but the elastic shellholder is lame. It seems obvious to me that I would not want elasticity in something like that, I would want rock solid so my shell is where it should be and comes out easily each and every time without any stubbornness. I want to be able to load shells into the holder easily with one hand and not need the other hand to HELP the thing in there. The weight savings are there but not enough to sacrifice the rigidity and consistency. It also bothers me that Santa was about to cancel Christmas because of some bad weather. He was actually gonna let all those kids down because of some snow. Good thing Rudolf was there with his incandescent nose.
  19. Only law enforcement and military can do such things!
  20. Side Armor. You'll have to replace your crappy M4 rail with the better Side Armor rail that it comes with. Once that new rail(s) is on there you can remove the shellholder from it's own rail very easily and quickly if you don't want it on at the time. This thing is solid, looks awsome, high quality, the shells fit nice and snug and it's worth the money. That 3gungear one you're looking at looks like a piece of junk and if I ever put that on my M4 I would probably (accidentally) shoot myself in a terrible shooting accident. You can save the extra $ and put junk on your gun but that's not what that beauty of a gun is all about now is it?
  21. Always good to see more cool stuff on the Carriercomp website.
  22. Usually in a situation like this I'm blaming the shooter. Up and left a lot of times is anticipation of recoil. But since you say others are having the same results maybe that's not it. Maybe try working on your form and DEPRESSING of the trigger to be absolutely sure it's not shooter error before you send in your Benelli.
