  1. As far as the butt pad goes it is really tight, I suppose thats better than having it fall off all the time, especially the first time you take it off. All I can say is focus on getting the bottom of the pad off first and once its out it should come off pretty easy. I would also say that unless you are adjusting the drop/cleaning the recoil spring tube, you dont really need to take the butt pad off, and I dont think you would need to do those operations all that often.
  2. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Funny story as it turns out we are going to drive it...the university will give us 50.5 cents per mile to drive 2400 miles roundtrip over a percentage of an airline ticket, thats bureaucracy for you I guess. But that does cut out pesky airport security and the additional cost of mailing all in one fell swoop. I didnt know what the scene was at airports anymore, I havent flown since before 911 and I have never flown with a gun before so I just try to do the right thing.
  3. Hey guys, I wanted to fly to San Antonio Texas (for a little trap and skeet competition as part of a school club) with my M2. I have a case that will make the trip but I have never flown with a gun before so I was looking for some good TSA accepted locks. I did order some from Dicks Sporting goods but when I got them I saw that they were really just suitcase locks not gun case locks. So my question is do you know of any place to get some good "fly-friendly" gun case locks? Thanks

    SBS/BBL work

As to the WTF in the picture there it looks to me like a TIG weld...not sure that that would be the greatest thing for a barrel but it would explain why it warped because there was too much heat...I hear welding takes some heat :-P

go to benelliusa.com and get the manual from your gun's page. The newly redesigned website has the owners manual linked right next to the gun. You should read that and take the gun apart to really see whats happening before going off to buy a new gun.
  6. I think storing in cases can get you into trouble quickly. I have seen guns packed in cases with silicone gun socks rust like crazy. I think this is because if you lock your gun in a case without any moisture control you are taking whatever moisture was around and keeping it close to your gun, obviously not a great idea. If you must store your gun in a case I would recommend a light coat of oil on everything and keeping the lid slightly open so the air can circulate. This is basically Duggan's closet approach, it works because the air humidity in residences is usually low (winter about 15-25% and in the summer the AC can take care of a good amount of moisture) and some circulation keeps any moisture from concentrating on your gun. However I do think a better way (especially if there are curious kids around) is to lightly oil it and put it in a safe with your favorite moisture control so that the humidity in the safe stays low (Tucker's approach).
  7. I think its somewhat funny that you say that you could live without the mag tube extension but will be keeping extra rounds in a shell carrier. To me an extended magazine tube is the ultimate shell carrier, especially if the extension you are taking off is +3 or better. I cannot think of any HD situation where I would rather be loading shells from a carrier over having the shells ready to go in the time it takes the action to cycle. If you were me (and I was you at that point) what I would do is keep the extension and the light and drop the shell carrier. Especially when you say that the 45 is your primary HD weapon, you would only be going for this shotgun in a super dire situation (eg you emptied the 45 but threat still remains), at which point I would think you would want all the firepower you can get right NOW and I think a loaded extension tube would be really helpful then.

When you say taped the bottom of the elevator you mean used tape to cover the rectangular hole in the elevator? If so inside or outside (side that the unloaded shell travels on or the side that faces the ground?) Did you clean the gun after the time without the jams?
  9. I dont know what everybody you are talking to, there have been entire threads on this forum devoted to recoil. Personally I think my M2 has very good recoil, I have a Smith and Wesson shotgun that is much heavier and I feel like it kicks harder than the M2. So if recoil is your main concern with a benelli find someone that has one with the comfortec system and try it out, but I wouldn't bee too concerned about it.
  10. Forgive my ignorance but where were you getting this? I was looking at the federal firearms regulations from the BATF and the most relavent part I could find (Section 478.39) says that you cant have a semiautomatic shotgun with more than 10 imported parts if it was listed as not being readily adapted for sporting purposes. I cant say I have heard of these rules before, I believe you, I just was wondering where you saw it.

    Ammo...

My gun club buys estate as cheap target rounds and they have never failed in my M2 so I cant imagine you would have a vastly different experiance with buckshot.
  12. I would definately think its that type of gun, he is looking for a tactical version after the election. Nothing sells guns faster than the fear of people losing them, one AR-15 rifle manufacturer is officially 100,000 rifles behind in production because everyone and their brother ordered one, so I would expect benelli is going through some of the same, especially M4s and the supernova tactical.
  13. I'm with you on the allen head, but more important I thought was getting it black...the hardware store I was at didnt have a black #4-40 screw and they were out of the allens and I wanted to get it back in action sooner rather than later thinking that a little shooting might reveal some other flaw I have not yet thought of. I havent heard of grit surfacing before but I suppose I'll have to try something like that, the surface now is a little tacky but not great so I guess we'll see.
  14. The longest part was setting up the button in the drill press as that was the part that really mattered and I couldnt do it over. But after that things went really quickly so I would say 30-35 minutes.
  15. Hey this isnt a question I just thought I would launch down a road that I thought was pretty cool. Duggan showed a picture of his gun and it has a nice button pad for quick and easy pressing. When he said that it cost him $125 I thought that was a little steep so I went about it the poor man's way. I took out the button and drilled a hole right in the middle of it with a drill press (would hate to mess that part up) and then tapped the hole for a #4-40 machine screw. Like this: After that I had a nice black piece of plastic lying around so I made it into a 1.5"x.75" rectangle. I drilled a clearance hole in the center and put a countersink on it for a flathead screw. Like this: All in all I thought it turned out really well and it cost me a grand total of $.22 for the screw to do. I'll admit I was a little scared about drilling because I would only get one shot before shopping for new parts. As Duggan mentioned getting the button back into the gun with the spring behind it required some finger acrobatics but nothing too especially akward. Anyway I thought I would throw that out there just for your amusement (and to see if I could post pictures successfully :-) ).

    M4 Pricing

tell me about it, I went into a store just to see how long it would be before I could buy an AR and the guy just laughed at me and said years...I bought a Benelli M2 about 8 months ago and it has become abundantly clear that I should have went for the AR then and got the M2 now since there isnt a run on those. As they say hindsight is 20/20
  17. if it took your hunting buddies to tell you that your gun was louder then I dont see what the problem is...if you are not bothered and you see good patterns out of the ported choke I dont see why you shouldnt keep it. Afterall even with a non-ported choke its not like you shooting your gun was any big secret to anyone within 100 yards anyway. So if it were me and my hunting buddies said my gun was louder I would reply with a wow it must be working better then! :-)

mine was tight too in the beginning, it has gotten easier but it still is not as easy as some of my other guns are, your thumb will adapt and then you will hardly notice :-)
  19. Hey, I have a M2 and I feel like the stock does not quite fit properly. I think the drop is too great because I have to put the butt of the gun high on my shoulder to get my cheek to seat against the comb and align my eye with the top of the rib. I will confess that I dont know much about stock adjustments so I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide or had any advice so that I could feel like I knew what I was doing instead of adjusting blindly. Thanks

    New M2

I have an M2 and its a beautiful gun. I would not be intimidated at all by this gun, the insides are very simple compared to other semi-autos I own, just take it all apart per the manual a few times and you'll have it down pat. The only difficulty I had was taking the bolt handle out, if you cant get it take some pliers and wrap the jaws with some tape so you wont mar the handle and it makes it easier to pull it out the first few times, but after that it should come out more easily. As far as your loads I dont see any problem with those, I mainly shoot 2 3/4" trap and small game loads and have never had any problems with cycling. I would think as far as break in you could run at least 1 box of heavier shells through, but it may or may not be required as I didnt have any heavy shells and was too excited to wait and everything worked just great with my lighter loads.
  21. Personally I think semi-autos are the way to go, now if you talk to some other people and are only going to use this gun for trap/skeet/sporting clays they may say differently. I bought a new M2 a while ago as a compliment to my old Smith&Wesson 1000 for hunting and it works well on the trap/skeet range. When I was in the market for the new gun I did look at remingtons but I was unimpressed by the gas ring system they had. The Smith&Wesson has a big piston and those rings that reminton uses just looked a little weak to me. I will say that the inertia system M2 is much simpler to fully break down to clean than my gas gun. But the brand of the gun is not nearly as important as the person behind it, so no matter what you end up choosing you just have to be familiar with how it works. As far as pump vs auto there are differences. I dont feel like my semi-auto guns kick as hard as the pumps, and I really like not having to think about reloading quickly for a double target. Semi-autos do have a slightly more complicated mechanism, but nothing that you should be afraid of taking apart. Semi-autos also need to be treated like a pretty woman, you have to pay attention and take care of them. Some people will tell you that they wont get a semi auto because they are unreliable, I bet those are the people that only clean their guns once a month. I thoroughly clean my guns after every day of shooting (take apart the gas/inertia system and wipe it down with an oiled cloth) and they perform flawlessly, at the very least all that cleaning will make you very familiar with how your gun works.
  22. The biggest thing I see new people mess up on is getting too excited with trap. Trap is one of those games where you have to take your time in a hurry. So dont just mash on the trigger the second you see a flash of orange, line up your shot and swing smoothly like you mean it. As novaking said patterning your shotgun would be helpful as then you can see where the main body of shot will go relative to your aiming bead. And I also agree that a modified choke would be best, you can tighten that up as you get better to really dust them. I wouldn't get too discouraged if you arent a superstar, most wildlife are a lot bigger than a clay pigeon and move a little slower than ~60mph haha, good luck.
  23. I'll second your opinion, I think that people can overthink the home defense situation. At in home ranges just about anything coming out of your shotgun is going to have all the power you would need, so it is really more of a question of penetration. If you are surrounded by houses then you really have to think about where your rounds would go if they overpenetrate or you simply miss. If you are in a rural area then you have much more freedom to choose high-power slugs or buckshot.
  24. Hi, I just bought a new M2 and like it for how few shells I have put through it so far. The only "problem" I'm having is that it seems a lot more difficult to put shells in the magazine than my other (non benelli) shotguns. It seems like the carrier latch (part that holds shells in the magazine) is resisting shells more than it should, the shells slide in easily until the metal rim needs to go past the carrier latch. So I was just wondering if this would go away with more use or if thats just the way things are. Thanks
