  1. I'm not particularly excited about the damage, but slugs are all I can use, here in Illinois we have those pesky rules. Sounds like you know all about them too.
  2. Hevi-shot has a personal defense round now in T shot. Though they have a dead-coyote load that can be up to 00. Shells are a little pricey but you get more pellets with T than #4 and the theory is that since hevi is denser than lead you really aren't losing anything by going a little smaller. But since it is denser it might penetrate more, but less than a slug I would think... That is if I can believe everything I read on the internet
  3. Well they are close. From the remington website the muzzle energy of 30-06 180gr maxes at 2967ftlbs, the remington buckhammer 1-3/8oz (601.6gr) has 3232ftlbs of muzzle energy. But as I think we all know a slug like that bleeds energy and accuracy fast so anything past 50-100yrs the 30-06 wins hands down. So if you are in heavy woods all the time and your max shot is 50ft the slug might be a good option.
  4. I did try that, but that wasn't my initial setup. First I just tried with cylinder choke. With the cylinder choke the slugs were about 1.5' spread in a horizontal line at 40 yards. Unimpressed I switched to the rifled choke and the slugs were about 1.5' spread in a vertical line at 40 yards... So I'm just poking around trying to find a combo that works. I don't have much in the way of sabot slugs so I'm going to get a few and see what happens with that rifled choke tube. I also heard around here that federal truballs work pretty well so I'm going to grab a few of those as well.
  5. When you say winchester super X's you mean the rifled slugs yes? I have carlsons rifled choke too and I tried some remington sluggers (basically the same as super X's as far as I can tell) but the grouping wasn't all that great. But definitely post pictures when you try the back magics, I'll be interested to see how sabots work with that choke. I'm currently in the search for an accurate slug load for that choke so I guess we'll see what happens.
  6. Have you tried cycling shells/snap caps through manually to see if you can spot the hangup? I would be really surprised if the magazine spring was the issue but you could make sure that the follower slides easily in the mag to cover all the bases.
  7. Hi welcome to the forum. What do you mean by not chambering exactly? Does the shell not come out of the magazine tube or is it getting stuck on the shell carrier or something else?
  8. first place I would check is gunbroker or similar. I don't see any on there now but not too long ago I did see exactly what you are looking for (Carbon fiber stock and forend) I don't remember right this moment how much it was but it wasn't too bad of a deal and it was in stock.
  9. Agreed, per govtrack: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-45 Its last action was Feb 9, 2009 where it was passed off to committee. It will likely never be heard from again. But if we are going to get all upset over bills that will go nowhere add HR 257 to the list. It'll raise age to possess a handgun and "semiautomatic assault rifle" to 21 for everyone, and won't let you keep a gun in a place where children are present. Its another bill that is no real threat but if you read it the right way and are looking for a bill to circle the wagons about then it might also suit you.
  10. Looks really good buddy, and it looks like you hosted the pictures right. I didn't know if you wanted pictures displayed like this but I took the liberty for one of them
  11. Yeah I did think about only 4 pellets causing that much damage but seeing as I don't have any evidence that the article was wrong I just went with it. An interesting part is that if it really was only 4 from the very edge of the pattern he might have missed Borders completely with 00 and only 9 or so pellets... Buckshot is definitely better than birdshot but if it was all I had I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
  12. while it wouldnt be my first choice notice: "he had been hit with #4 shot, not buckshot and that only four pellets had struck him" "two of the shotgun pellets had actually penetrated into Borders' brain two fractured vertebrae in his neck and back, and an additional brain injury from the whiplash effect of the blow to his head and subsequent impact with the ground." Thats a lot of injury for only 4 pellets. Standard pellet count lists 134 pellets per ounce for #4. So I'm thinking if Mettinger had hit Borders with anything more than the extreme edge of his pattern, it would have been lights out for permanent for Borders. So while I wouldn't go so far as to say it is effective I definitely would not say it was ineffective...
  13. Trapshooter slugs and buckshot come in boxes of 5, so I already have that capability Joking aside I have seen that before. As an engineer I'm fascinated with it, but I could not find the price or the actual patent info. And seeing as I haven't the foggiest idea as to when I might use such a thing I'm not in a hot hurry to have one. But it is pretty sweet...
  14. Funny you should mention Lindenwood, I actually went to the ACUI nationals this year and the winchester ammo performed flawlessly as a matter of fact. But anyway the funny story about that is that I was shooting with a Lindenwood shooter in the International Trap competition and he said that he has thrown is gun in the trash 3 times before and someone brought it back to him everytime. When he said that he was close to doing it again I told him that if he threw it away I was going to pick it up and he wasn't going to get it back. Needless to say there were no guns in trash barrels.
  15. I think its easy to overthink things a bit, I don't see that you would have any problems with the setup you have now after you get your barrel threaded. So I would just wait, and put a few cases through your gun and see what you feel like you might want. The second bead supposedly helps to get your sight picture perfect but I have always found a mid bead distracting personally, but again it is up to personal preference. As far as sights, beads are the best for wing/clay shooting so I wouldn't change to iron sights or anything goofy like that. But I did replace my factory bead on my M2 with a hiviz sight, I just prefer a little brighter bead in the front. Check out some of the options: http://www.hivizsights.com/ http://www.truglo.com/content/products/firearm/wing_clay/category.asp Again I would say go shooting for a bit and see what you think you need after distributing some lead.
  16. You just type too fast for me trapshooter, when I started I was the only one replying and then I saw that you got two in before I could get one
  17. Let me just say you CAN do trap/skeet with a full, its possible but its harder to get started. Full would be ok for trap, but I would not recommend it for skeet. A Modified choke would work for both. HOWEVER, I would say if you are taking it to a gunsmith to get the choke changed you might as well go the full way and have it threaded for removables. I know that you said you are not interested, but if you take it to a gunsmith it might be about the same price to change the choke vs cut it for removables. With removeables you can put in any choke you desire/need today. If you just cut out the full and move it down to a modified or something else and find out that is too open for you then it is over, you cannot add metal. I know a girl that is excellent at trap (consistently 97+/100) and she could not hit more than 5 targets in skeet with her full choke in. I convinced her to try with a skeet choke and on her first go with the more open choke she got a 21. The point is I just think your gun will be more versatile and you will have more fun if you can match your choke to the type of shooting each game requires.
  18. I don't know a whole lot a about the 3 1/2", but the way it seems is that shells that long are heavy waterfowl/turkey loads when you want a little more power with a little more shot. I do like the inertia system a little better than gas. I inherited a Smith and Wesson shotgun that had been neglected in the cleaning department and it took forever to get it back up to snuff. I have left my M2 go for 1000 rounds without cleaning and opening it up after that and it was still very clean. I'm with you on the cleaning the gun after each use practice, but I would be more confident in the inertia without cleaning than the gas. The inertia system has only a few parts that are simple to take apart and put back together, and its weight is right between the hands which is where I like it. Its a good system so I wouldn't be worried too much about it. Thats just my opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it
  19. I'd vote an M2, I have been nothing but happy with mine. You get the 3" capability, works well with light loads in my experience. Weight is pretty light, and recoil is negligible with light loads. You might also look at the vinci, if for no other reason that its newer...both are a little over 1000 but not too bad. If you want to go outside benelli then your choices open up. But I would say that the 1100 you have is a good gun, but you could get a new one with a synthetic stock. Personally I would try to stick to semi auto, not that I have anything against pumps or others but I just like semis more.
  20. Agreed, wait and see how the 1100 works for you before you go out buying a new gun. IMHO a semi-auto is better, but you can certainly get opinions to the contrary. I would not be concerned at all about not having 3", especially if the majority of your time is going to be with clay sports. But I would say if you were to do anything getting it cut for removable choke tubes would be the most useful thing.
  21. I don't know about these ones, the picture is pretty bad but it looks to me like its a $60 piece of plastic with briley's name on it and a hole for a screw to go into the button. I made my own by drilling and tapping a hole through the OEM button and putting a plastic pad on top. The briley one looks to do the same thing as far as I can tell. But mine only cost $0.22 and a little bit of time. M1014 put something similar on his M4 with a 1911 magazine release. Duggan got a whole replacement button from GG&G I believe, it looks really good but its for an M4 so I don't know if that would work for an M2. That said the pad has been the single best improvement I have made to my M2. So if you end up getting a bolt release mod, unless its a really crappy one, I think you will be nothing but happy with it.
  22. I have enjoyed my M2 immensely, good choice.
  23. well if that is what benelli said I would go with that, I'll admit that I wasn't as concerned with the actual thread size when the sight I ordered came with a screw for benellis and it fit in just nice
  24. Supposedly its 3-56. When I took off the front sight I didnt use any heat, you might want to. But all I did was take some needle nose pliers get as much surface contact as possible and gently and gradually increase pressure until the locktite broke and then it was out, and the new sight went in very easily.
  25. I think the point he is getting at is that any sabot would not be good with your M4 because it is a smooth bore, you would need a rifled barrel to take advantage of sabots.
