  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of shotgunning! Choke and shot combinations for specific game is something you'll learn over time. Until then, follow the guidelines in the table near the bottom of this page. [ 12-15-2005, 06:38 AM: Message edited by: tucker301 ]
  2. That's about $200-$300 too high. Look around on gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com.
  3. Waylon, Is your grandfather's name Brian? And, YES... where are those pictures of that monster blind you were building? [ 12-13-2005, 10:12 PM: Message edited by: tucker301 ]

  7. Rrrrrrright. Funny thing... Iv'e never seen you both in the same place at the same time
  8. Don't be so sure, Wildfowler. If Beretta made a LH Xtrema2, I would already have traded. Even still, I'm not done thinking about it Benelli SBEII: Pros - Ultra-reliable Inertia system, easy as **** to clean, light and fast, probably more options with aftermarket barrels and parts. Cons - That lightness translates to kick, and plenty of it. Thin and easily scuffed (matte black models) exterior finish, some owners have trouble with target loads (the same kinds of people who get their BMW's stuck on a logging road I suppose?) Beretta Xtrema2: Pros - Kick off recoil reduction, Aqua protective finish, gas operation further reduces recoil, and can handle light loads. Cons - Newer model may still have kinks to work out (but I haven't heard of too many), lesser availability of barrels and aftermarket parts, No LH version. Some people also prefer the shorter forearm on the SBEII. I certainly do. Both are fine guns, and it isn't like comparing the SBEII to the Stoeger 2000. These are class weaposn by class manufacturers.
  9. I would expect that a rifled barrel would put a wicked spin on a shot cup. As soon as the shot column left the barrel, centrifugal force would do its thing. I have lived in a dog chase region all of my life. I've used slugs, buckshot, and rifles, with the latter being the preferred weapon. I've got a buddy who's been shooting the same HK940 for 20 years, and he can put a running deer down at 200 yards with nothing more than a glimpse of him through head-high cutover. It's an amazing thing to watch. I prefer to still or stand hunt, but I will go with them sometimes for the fun factor. Very few of these guys use anything but rifles, and they rarely, rarely miss. A lot people don't realize that deer chased by dogs do not run flat out all the time. They stop and look back often, checking to see if they're still being pursued. They'll side-step the hounds and hole up in a thicket or creek bottom, then try to sneak out the back door. As Butch said, by far the majority of wounded deer that get away are shot with buckshot. I only use it if I'm hunting heavy, heavy cover and at close ranges. BTW: The last accident in the club was about 30 years ago when a long-time member foolishly crossed a fence with a loaded rifle and shot himself right through the heart. In that case, the weapon would not have made much difference.

  13. Regardless of where you start, cutting the barrel to 18" will yield the same results. Make sure to have it cut by a skilled professional and to have it properly re-crowned, if you go through with it. Recoil may actually be slightly lessened, because you will not achieve optimum pressures with 18" of stick. This is assuming you're using factory loads. If handloading, you can compensate to some degree by using faster burning powders and a little more of it. At 18", it's going be markedly louder on the shooter end.

  16. The regular deer license and season in VA also covers you on elk, but there are very few elk here. The Virginia Game Commission wants us to kill every elk we see on VA soil. This is because they do not support the elk re-stocking programs in neighboring states. They say not enough research has been done and they're afraid that bringing elk in from the Rockies and dessert mountain states may also bring in diseases and parasites to which the local deer populations have no resistance. The vast majority of my area, Piedmont VA (in the middle), is hardwood and pine forests mixed with agriculture. Here, the farms and fields are small, compared to the midwest. An average farm may be only 50-100 acres, but they're all bordering each other. Fields over 15 acres in size are quite rare. An increasing trend here is to plant pines and harvest them in 15-20 years. The mix of old-growth hardwoods, smal fileds and woodlots, plenty of rivers and streams, and pine thickets is pretty much as good as it gets for deer. I live in town, and my neighborhood is pretty much full of houses, with a new development going in behind us. I have seen as many as 13 deer in my yard at one time. Here's a view from my den window from late summer 2004.

How can you tell she's French? I can't see her pits
  22. In VA, ours are just slightly higher at $45 for about the same package. A few years ago, if we used up our tags that cam with the original purchase, we could buy an unlimited amout of additional tags. I think you got 3 more for $15, but I'm not sure of that number. I know some guys who, with those tags and landowner crop damage tags, killed over 30 deer a year.
  23. The rifle looks like a Remington 700 or 40XB, Tactical or Varmint, with an aftermarket stock... McMillian maybe. The photo was posted in another group. I just copied it to here. The intro on Leupold's website eludes to the eclipse. "In 2006, everything you know about riflescopes will be eclipsed". [ 12-09-2005, 05:23 AM: Message edited by: tucker301 ]
  24. Yes, the eclipse name is relevant to the shape. The idea is to allow larger obj. diameter scopes to be mounted closer to the centerline of the bore. One benefit of mounting as closely as possible to the bore plane is to reduce the effects of canting at longer ranges. I don't know how big this one is, but I was wandering around Zeiss' European website the other night and saw a 6-24X72 mm model.
