Survey predicts a more productive season for nation's duck hunters By TIM TUCKER Special to The Sun July 28. 2006 6:01AM The nation's duck hunters received good news recently with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's preliminary survey on breeding ducks and waterfowl habitat in the western U.S. and Canada. Biologists estimated a 14-percent increase from last year. The count estimated there are 36.2 million ducks on the vital nesting prairie grounds. Thanks to ample rain and a warm winter, the total pond count for critical nesting areas indicated 6.1 million ponds - up 13 percent from last year and 26 percent above the long-term average. The survey has been conducted for the past 51 years. "Overall, this season should be a little more productive than last year," said Bruce Batt, Ducks Unlimited chief biologist. Restrictive seasons and bag limits on pintails is credited with helping that species recover from dangerously low numbers. This year's pintail count was 3.386 million, which is still 18 percent below the long-term average but 32 percent better than last year's count. Blue-winged teal are up 28 percent from last year (30 percent long term). Green-winged teal are up 20 percent from last year (39 percent long term). Gadwall showed a 30 percent increase from last year and are up 67 percent long term. The breeding survey was conducted in May and a fall flight forecast survey was completed this month. Federal and state biologists use these numbers to decide hunting season dates and bag limits.

Is the Ultra Light offered with a 26" barrel? Might be a good choice for this model.

Wood ducks are tasty!

sdkidaho Compare to an 11-87, 870, Browning Auto-5, Win. Model 12, Beretta 303. All these are noticeably shorter than the benelli. The Extrema has an exceptionally long receiver like the SBE.
-
Remember that the receiver on a SBE is quite long compared to many other pumps and autos. If you stand an SBE with a 26" barrel next to a lot of other guns with a 28" barrel, they are about the same length. I have a 26" SBE and have never regretted the decision. Also, if you use an after market choke of the extended type, you gain close to an inch in length with it in place.

bonoiam This situation has become unacceptable. I would contact Benelli CS again and ask to speak to the manager. Tell them that the dealer won't work with you and that a replacement gun is the only reasonable solution to this problem. Be VERY firm about that! Good luck and let us know what they say. Benelli likes to say they produce a top-of-the-line product-----well they must provide first rate Customer Service to back their product up!!

mudhen, Do both the SBE and SBE II require a different forearm when using the slug barrel? I thought you needed a different one with the SBE, but the SBE II original forearm would fit on the slug barrel. I think I read that somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now.

I have an X-Coil on my SBE-------it works great. I also tried a Limbsaver on it. I must say the X-Coil is superior in recoil reduction---- in my opinion. [ 06-28-2006, 03:30 PM: Message edited by: Remy ]

I am curious about magazine removal myself. Does anyone have experience with this?

Buck Gardner makes great calls---------they have a very realistic, strong tone. His prices are also very reasonable.

I like Primos Dead Zone and Briley extended tubes. Trulocks are great too.

WOW!----unplugged guns, extended hours, 15 bird daily limits----awesome. Now, my only complaint is-------What about the Pacific Flyway !!!!!!!!!!!! -
Dandy, The forearm should come off the gun still attached to the barrel. Are you taking the bolt handle out of the bolt at the beginning of disassembly, as the manual instructs you to? It works better to remove the bolt handle first instead of trying to wiggle the barrel/forearm assembly over and around the bolt with the handle still attached. Once the barrel/forearm assembly is removed away from the rest of the gun, you simply pull the forearm down and away from the barrel. In regards to removing the bolt handle from the bolt, most of the time you cannot pull it out with your fingers as it says in the manual. I have a 12 inch piece of small diameter braided nylon cord that use to remove the bolt handle with. I tie one end around the base of the handle, then grasp the line and give it a pull while holding the gun with my other hand. The bolt handle comes right out! Here is a link to the Hi-viz, X-Coil recoil pad being sold by Cabela's. X-Coil pads work great! http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712&id=0022047&navCount=8&parentId=cat208 11&returnPage=&navAction=jump&returnQueryString=_DARGS%3D/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A%26_DAV%3DMainCatcat20712%26id%3D0022047227619a%26navCount%3D4%26podId%3D0022047% 26parentId%3Dcat20811%26navAction%3Dpush%26catalogCode%3DXF%26rid%3D%26parentType%3Dindex%26indexId%3Dcat20811%26hasJS%3Dtrue&link=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20811&rid= [ 06-12-2006, 10:36 AM: Message edited by: Remy ]

Hey hk53, Did you get those at the Expo Gun Show? I was going to go today, but I have some sort of bug so I decided to stay home. Did the guy you got your goodies from have any more?
-
Did you try squirting some WD-40 around the edge of the muzzle where choke meets the barrel. If you use a concentrator tube to direct the flow into that specific area, the WD-40 should flow down into the threads and after letting it set for 30 minutes or so, hopefully it will break loose. Gun oil does not work as well as a penetrant like WD-40 will. I hope your gun came with one of the good choke wrenches----not one of the cheap ones they sometimes include.

Here is an earlier post by tucker301 that shows in a very clear manner how to reverse a right hand safety around for left hand use on a SBE. Maybe your model Benelli is somewhat similar. http://www.benelliusa.com/forums/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/1591.html#000003
-
I think he means that the gun cost the equivalent of $1800 US dollars AFTER conversion from their currency. It does not surprise me that in a high tax semi-socialist country like Sweden a SBE would cost $1800.00 dollars
-
I would have sent it to Benelli. They would fix it or REPLACE it. I guess I just have had too many problems with local gunsmiths and incompetence in my life.
-
I have shot (from the left side) the following right hand semi-autos without any problem: 1) Winchester Super-X 2) Browning Auto-5 3) Browning B-80 4) Beretta 303 5) Benelli SBE 6) Remington 11-87 I have never shot a left-handed auto, so I cannot comment on them. If you are thinking about a pump, I would choose either a Browning BPS or an Ithaca Model 37. I am not sure about the safety on the Supernova-----call Benelli customer service.

Hey livergsp, If you want a SBE II barrel in 28 inch length here is one on ebay------but you only have about an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7242776990 [ 05-28-2006, 06:52 PM: Message edited by: Remy ]

Likwid, I like your line of thinking !!!!!!

losthwy, I agree with tucker. I paid around $940.00 for a brand new SBE synthetic about four months ago. The shop also had SBE Camo guns for a similar price. If I was you I would check with the online sources and shops in your area. I bought my SBE at a Sportsman's Warehouse. I know there are Sportsman's Whses. in Colorado---maybe check with them. If you cannot find an SBE around anywhere, then definitely an M2 would be a great alternative. Good luck!
