philmonty
Hi guys I have a stock M4, and I am looking to add a tactical light system - I'd rather not pay hundreds of dollars for a replacement rail system, as it's overkill for what I need. I can't imagine attaching anything else apart from the light (and perhaps a side saddle later). The main requirement I am looking for is that I can field strip the gun without tools. Any advice? I use a laserlyte model I bought from the Scottsdale Gun Club on my M4. Have an Streamlight Tlr-2 mounted on it and love the light/laser combo. shotgunNoob
The beforementioned setup seems nice. Have never tried it myself. I went with a "traditional" barrel/mag tube clamp attachment (w/rail). Its a pain in the a** though, as I need to remove the clamp when cleaning the barrel. This other setup just might be more practical. Either way, you are looking at clamps that are either barrel mounted, mag tube mounted or barrel/tube mounted. Take your pick. Or...just get one of these. No light necessary. Edited January 2, 2009 by shotgunNoob

utah2271
I have the mag/barrel clamp that tacticalshotgunner.com sells. I mounted a Surefire M951. I love how it turned out. Simple and functional. philmonty
Does anyone have any experience with the Surefire 617LF weapon light system - looks pretty neat. They only say M1 & M2 models - does anyone know if it fits an M4? http://www.surefire.com/LED-Momentary-Constant-On-Switching-617LF
sneakerfreak602
Does anyone have any experience with the Surefire 617LF weapon light system - looks pretty neat. They only say M1 & M2 models - does anyone know if it fits an M4? http://www.surefire.com/LED-Momentary-Constant-On-Switching-617LF According to my local shop it does not. I looked at all surefire options and ended up witht he Tlr-2 because you get a reliable laser/light combo for much less then the surefire. The laser is perfect for homedefense and a huge bonus for shooting fun. The laser is just flat out s**t yoor pant scary if your on the wrong end. I also like the fact that I can take the light/laser off very easily and mount it on my hk compact. Further more it has 3 mode light only, light/laser combo, and light only. It only weighs about 4 or so ounces and keep the natural weight balance. The reason I recommmend the streamlight is the no excuses lifetime warranty and that so many officers carry them on there guns here in Phoenix area and swear by them. Also this light option will save you at least 150-200 bucks over comparable surefire lights that don't even have a laser. Also you can get the light only Tlr-1 for 99 bucks if cash is an issue. Trust me Phil I racked my brains for weeks trying to find the perfect light for my M4 before buying the Tlr-2 Light laser combo. It is the perfect fit for me and My M4.Damn I sound like im newly in love.lol.
philmonty
Thanks Sneakerfrek - I will take a look at the TLR-2. How did you attach the unit to the M4?
sneakerfreak602
Thanks Sneakerfrek - I will take a look at the TLR-2. How did you attach the unit to the M4? Used the laserlyte tri rail I mentioned earlier. The light/laser has a spring type mount that attaches to the rail. If you click the link in the above thread you can also get the laser/light from Sgcusa.com as well(under weaponmounted flashlights). Cheapest price around.Enjoy. philmonty
Ok, understood. Do you need to remove the laserlyte rail to field strip the gun?

It was a tapered rail for a AR rifle forend. I milled it down and mounted it to my M4 from the inside. Erik

philmonty
Erik That is fricking awesome. Love how you modified the stock forend, and can flick the light switch without an extension cable. I might try to do what you have done, with perhaps a shorter rail. Any advice? Phil

Play around with some diffrent lengths. the front of the hand guards are tappered.......makes it hard to mount a light up front. that is why mine is so long. Ill try and take some pics soon Erik
mtstream
I have the same feelings about attaching a rail that requires a hex wrench to remove in order to field strip a weapon that was designed to be tooless. Granted, I'm not in the field needing to strip my weapon but it still bothers me :-) I also don't want to replace my forehand grip with rails, it's just not comfortable to me. I would be interested in an integrated light/forehand grip like what SureFire has for the other Super 90s. Sidearmor seems to have the best concept I've seen (sidearmor.com) but it's pricey - you can find them on gunbroker for a little less but still close to $300. I don't know - are rails worth $300? I have no idea what it would cost to mfg something like this so I can't really tell if it's a fair price or marked up for a niche market. sneakerfreak602
I like to buy the best for my M4 but cant justify the 300 rail when the 25 laserlyte works great.Plus you can get the light/laser combo with rail for much less. If placed properly on the gun field stripping will not require removal of the rail.
philmonty
How do you mount the laserlyte rail so field stripping is still possible? Do you mount it on the barrel?
sneakerfreak602
How do you mount the laserlyte rail so field stripping is still possible? Do you mount it on the barrel? I have mine mounted on the magazine barrel right infront of the hand grip so I can use the switch very naturally. Its tricky but I found out though trial and error if you place it just right it will still dissaseble without having to remove the rail. And oh btw the laser light combo is absolutely sick.lol. OhioM4
I gave up on finding a flashlight mount. I just wrap the end of the muzzle in flaming gasoline soaked rags and use a pie plate as a reflector. Now I'm good to go for Frankenstein monsters as well as Zombies! elchino
Is the TLR-1 essentially the same amount of light as TLR-2 but without the laser and strobe? I am looking for a light for the M4 but do not want to break the bank!!

I am looking for a light for the M4 but do not want to break the bank!! Hey elchino ad welcome to the forum. Yes, the TLR-1 is the same without the laser. I have both, the TLR-1 on my M4 and the TLR-2 on my Glock 21sf .45 Later, Hookster
